CAPRICA & BSG at Nerd Prom (aka Comic-Con) 2010

Maureen Ryan has confirmed with SyFy they are bringing CAPRICA to San Diego Comic-Con this year.

Starz has announced that Lucy Lawless will attend the SPARTACUS: BLOOD & SAND panel, and there is a rumor that James Callis will be attending with the EUREKA panel (he has joined the cast for the new season, which premieres July 9, to play physicist Dr. Grant).

The HAWAII FIVE-O panel will include co-star Grace Park. Writer/producer Mark Verheiden will be there for a panel about his new series FALLEN SKIES, co-produced by HEROES' Greg Beeman and executive produced by Steven Spielberg.

If any of you hear about additional BATTLESTAR GALACTICA alumni at SDCC this year, shout it out in the comments.

For the first time ever I am going to SDCC myself, and will cover as much as I possibly can from the TV and Film worlds over at my new site The FemmeBot. Come check it out!

Last Blast Till Caprica

I just saw BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: THE PLAN, and truly enjoyed it.

There will be much more to say after the DVD and BluRay hit stores on October 27, but for now let me leave it at this: Anyone who ever felt intrigued by Cavil, Boomer, all the various *real* Sixes, and the other "minor" cylon models, will find plenty to enjoy in this film. Anders gets a surprising amount of screentime. There is a very enlightening moment with Leoben. As I hoped, we get a few memorable doses of this new Six. The Cavils -- and really, the cylons in general -- get the coda I always thought they deserved. It was big frakkin' fun to see great moments from seasons one and two woven in. Gods I didn't realize how much I missed you, BSG.

The whole film is cleverly reverse-engineered to keep asking that first question from the miniseries: "Are You Alive? Prove it."

ETA: warning - readers are posting spoilers in the comments on this post.

New clips from THE PLAN

Last night BATTLESTAR GALACTICA fans were treated to two different sneak peaks at the upcoming telefilm THE PLAN, which promises to revisit the events of the BSG timeline from the cylon perspective.

SciFi previewed a new clip of Cavil talking to Ellen last night on air, and we at the Sitrep are not against aiming the frakkin' Flipcam at the TeeVee now and then for your pleasure:

ETA Sunday: SciFi has posted the official clip now:

Meanwhile, at the World Science Festival panel last night in New York City another exclusive clip, of Cavil with Boomer, was screened for the audience. Uberfangrrl and friend of the blog prolix_allie was nice enough to write up a description of it for us. In honor of our more spirginal readers, we are putting that info in the comment section of this post.

For a bit more footage of THE PLAN, here's the trailer released a few months ago:

I'm getting that tingly feeling again...must be time for Comic Con rumors!

RDM playing nice in the halls of Comic Con 2008...

First bits and pieces of Comic Con 2009 panel info, both rumored and officially announced, have begun to trickle onto the blogosphere this past week for some of the TV and film projects. I'll be tracking a lot of both over on FanGrrl Magnet if you are curious.

But to the question that you dear readers most want here at Sitrep...what about BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and CAPRICA?

Nothing has been announced by Sci Fi/NBCU yet, but Seat42F says all nets and studios have had their Comic Con meetings and made their decisions. I've been poking some sources hoping for more info. It's a bit soon to do a CAPRICA panel, given production is starting next month, the cast and crew will be busy, and there wouldn't be any new footage in time for the Con.

My money is on a panel for THE PLAN, which airs this September November on SciFi.

Watch this space...

[Speaking of cons and plans, did you know Ron Moore is the announced Guest Of Honor at this year's London MCM Expo? And that Olmos recently said this about THE PLAN?]

Something for your BSG DTs

If you are still recovering from BSG withdrawl DTs, let me suggest a few shows that might help fill the void.

KINGS (NBC; Hulu) - Brings the ancient tale of David and Goliath into a modern city setting, populated by incredible actors such as Ian McShane (DEADWOOD), Eamonn Walker (OZ), Dylan Baker and Brian Cox. Shakespearean level drama plus metaphors of politics, religion, leadership that remind me weekly of BSG. But sorry -- no robots. Sunday nights on NBC. ETA: NBC just announced the final 8 eps of the series are going to air Saturday nights starting April 18.

Pilot episode "Goliath"

TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES (Fox; Hulu) - Here's your robots folks! Religious metaphors, intense and beautiful women (some metal) kicking huge amounts of ass, an endless war between cyborgs and their human creators, apocalypse threatening around every corner. And for added fun: TIME TRAVEL. Yes, the season is over next Friday; yes, there are rumors of the show's imminent cancellation. But look...we are just trying to patch up our wounds here, people. It doesn't have to last forever. Season finale is Friday April 10 on Fox. ETA: and sorry I forgot to mention -- Bear McCreary does the music for this show.

I Know How He Feels.

Obama Depressed, Distant Since 'Battlestar Galactica' Series Finale

Obama told aides he feels "like a cylon without a Resurrection Ship."

WASHINGTON—According to sources in the White House, President Barack Obama has been uncharacteristically distant and withdrawn ever since last month's two-hour series finale of Battlestar Galactica.

"The president seems to be someplace else lately," said one high-level official, speaking on condition of anonymity. "Yesterday we were all being briefed on the encroachment of Iranian drone planes into Iraq, when he just looked up from the table and blurted out, 'What am I supposed to watch on Fridays at 10 p.m. now? Numb3rs?'"

"I haven't seen him this upset since Admiral Adama realized that Earth was actually an uninhabitable wasteland," the official continued. "Or at least that's what he told me. I don't actually watch the show. It's not really my thing."

Obama attempts to console himself with leaked production stills from the upcoming spin-off Caprica.

Since the end of the series, Obama has reportedly brushed off key budgetary decisions, ignored his wife and children, and neglected his daily workouts, claiming that he no longer cares if he lets himself go "just like Lee did before the rescue on New Caprica."

In addition, sources confirmed that instead of meeting with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Monday, the depressed president sat alone in the Oval Office, scouring Internet message boards for posts by other fans about the series conclusion.

Hoping to cheer himself up, Obama also decided to re-watch the extended director's cut of "Unfinished Business," a season three episode he once described as "bringing the Starbuck-Apollo relationship to a head in the best possible way."

Revisiting the series, however, has only made the president more miserable. After a staffer suggested he bring DVDs of the show along on a recent policy trip to Denver, Obama reportedly muttered under his breath, "What's the point? It's over."

"We were going over his schedule when he sighed and asked if I watched Battlestar," said a White House secretary, whom Obama used to playfully call "Billy." "I told him I was planning on it because my sister's a big fan, but he just stared out the window the whole time."

"I also noticed he took down his Battlestar Galactica season 4.5 poster," she added.

Ron Moore forum Q&A

Many things that you guys have been discussing here this week, were addressed in this Q&A Ron Moore did the other night on the SciFi.com BSG forum.

Food for thought...

All This Has Happened Before...

Another topic thread for you folks: at BATTLESTAR's end, Baltar, Caprica Six, and their "Head" dopplegangers were explained...sort of. What did you think of these revelations? Are we seeing angels? Demons? Projections? Hallucinations? God(s)? Aliens?

I'd like to quote BSG/CAPRICA writer/producer Jane Espenson here, from a Q&A she did at Boston Globe's Viewer Discretion blog earlier today:

Question: Starbuck an Angel??? Really???

Espenson: I'm going to answer re Starbuck and the "head" people, too. Well, here's how I always saw it. If someone from a far-advanced culture somewhere in the universe took an interest in humanity, isn't it possible that with their advanced tech that they could have abilities that would seem to us miraculous. Maybe we'd think of them as "Angels." Maybe they're the whole reason we have a myth of "Angels." But that's just me. The great thing about great novels (or tv series) is that some things are left open to your own philosophical solutions.

...That final ending was an image that Ron had in his head since Season One, which amazes me. He always felt that the show ended with a Six and a Baltar walking through Times Square.

Question: I was wondering if the angel Baltar in Times Square was actually Lucifer.

Espenson: I can see that -- there is something very much like the ol' bar bet about Job going on there, isn't there? There's something very appealing to me about Head Baltar having been the original source for the Lucifer character.

Question: ...I'm still a bit stuck on the Kara Thrace story...I don't make the conection on how she was the "Harbinger of Death" - it would seem that she was quite the opposite. Can you elaborate?

Espenson: I took that to be a reference to the fact that she led us to the place at which (pure) humanity ends -- from here on out, what we call human has Cylon DNA in it.

To Be Continued

"The love that people have for [BATTLESTAR GALACTICA] is overwhelming...

[On BSG,] the writers would write something. The actors, directors, production team would then take it to another level. Then the editors and post production people would take it to another level. And then we would show it on the air -- and the audience would take it to another level...

In every step, it became more..."

-- Edward James Olmos

This is ours now folks. Forever. Enjoy.

Good News Bad News

The good: yesterday's entire U.N. panel is now archived on the U.N. Webcast Archives. Here is a more direct link that opens up the video itself (RealPlayer).

The very, very bad: I just heard from youtuber SevorTB that youtube HAS DELETED HIS ENTIRE FRAKKING ACCOUNT for copyright violation. A treasure trove of BSG videos from the past several seasons has just been taken down. SevorTB, thank you so much for all your hard work and all the pleasure you've brought over the years to fans around the world. This frakking sucks.

UN Webcast Live

Thanks to the BSG Blog for alerting us that tonight's UN Panel will be live webcast at this site on Channel 1. According to the site they also archive their broadcasts for later viewing.

Also, here's a bit more info on how this panel was set up in the first place.

Time Sensitive

A couple of time-sensitive things have popped up this week, so let me post them all here right away:

There is a contest over at Wet Paint BSG Wiki to win a CAPRICA pilot film DVD, which asks you to guess how many BSG characters will still be standing at the end of the finale.

AfterEllen will be hosting a live chat online with BSG/CAPRICA writer/producer Jane Espenson, this Thursday at 9pm ET.

Something to read (and bitch about) before Friday night: Ron Moore discussing the fan theories that have popped up around Daniel The Cylon, during the podcast commentary for "Islanded in a Sea of Stars." Since we don't have a spoiler-cut here, I've posted a transcript at the BSG blog. Thanks to reader Trey for typing it up!

Sackhoff Frak Party in Portland

I am quite sure we'll be seeing the official, higher quality video of Katee Sackhoff's appearance at the Cort & Fatboy Portland Frak Party from last Friday....but for now, fans SlyOyster and ninjahq posted a ton of video snippets on their youtube channels...I hear the show was huge fun and totally packed, with many folks turned away at the door.

ETA: Here is SlyOyster's blog post about the event (spoiler warning) and links to all his youtube vids.

Via Spoiler TV, here are scans of the TV Guide BSG feature. Logan read the piece, and tells me it does have some spoilers which I, and some of you out there, probably do not want to read.

United Nations Panel. Yes, you read that right.

You know very little can surprise me about our beloved show anymore... especially after this past year and the various goings-on, announcements, etc. Yet I continue to be amazed by where it all goes some days.

News via Mo Ryan:

On March 17, there will be a "Battlestar" retrospective at the U.N. in New York and a panel discussion of how the show examined issues such as "human rights, children and armed conflict, terrorism and human rights and reconciliation and dialogue among civilizations and faith," according to Sci Fi.

The "Battlestar" contingent on the panel will consist of executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, as well as stars Mary McDonnell (who plays president Laura Roslin on the show) and Edward James Olmos (Admiral William Adama).

UN representatives on the panel are Radhika Coomaraswamy, special representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict; Craig Mokhiber, deputy director of the New York office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights; and Robert Orr, assistant secretary-general for policy planning, executive office of the Secretary-General.

The panel will be moderated by "Battlestar" fan Whoopi Goldberg.

The invitation-only panel will take place at 7 p.m. March 17 in the U.N.'s Economic and Social Council Chamber, three days before the Sci Fi show's series finale.

So how many TV shows are there in the known universe that can rock the San Diego Comic Con AND the halls of The U.N.? Just stunning.

Yes fandom, it is "invitation-only"...but given that Emmy season is coming, we have to assume there will be video on SciFi.com soon enough. (And no, Logan and I weren't invited.)
