CAPRICA & BSG at Nerd Prom (aka Comic-Con) 2010

Maureen Ryan has confirmed with SyFy they are bringing CAPRICA to San Diego Comic-Con this year.

Starz has announced that Lucy Lawless will attend the SPARTACUS: BLOOD & SAND panel, and there is a rumor that James Callis will be attending with the EUREKA panel (he has joined the cast for the new season, which premieres July 9, to play physicist Dr. Grant).



The HAWAII FIVE-O panel will include co-star Grace Park. Writer/producer Mark Verheiden will be there for a panel about his new series FALLEN SKIES, co-produced by HEROES' Greg Beeman and executive produced by Steven Spielberg.

If any of you hear about additional BATTLESTAR GALACTICA alumni at SDCC this year, shout it out in the comments.

Comic-Con 2009

The beautiful madness of The Geek Prom, aka San Diego Comic-Con, began last night.

There is a ton of stuff going on that we BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and CAPRICA fans will enjoy hearing about soon enough...not to mention a ton of other things in film and television both. I'm sure a lot of fans who attend will leave their thoughts, photos, videos and love over at the siffy forums and the livejournal community.

Halfway Through Hiatus

My fellow fans, we are now at the halfway point of our 7-month BATTLESTAR GALACTICA hiatus. It’s a long one …and we all need some distraction. Distraction from wondering what THE PLAN is about…from the endless spoiler discussions… from the disturbing news of the final dismantling of all of BSG’s sets… from worrying about when the frak SciFi is going to air that two hours of CAPRICA. OK, yes, I'll admit there may be a few other things going on right now as well.

What better way to distract ourselves than with...other TV shows and TV news?! Some of the BSG cast and crew seem to be drifting out into the rest of the shows I watch…I recently posted on FanGrrl Magnet a rundown of Fall shows that have my attention.

As we catalog some comings and goings today, we’d love you, dear readers, to chime in here with rec’s for hiatus distractions of your own...


Mark Verheiden has been blogging up a storm lately, pointing out his new Fangoria interview, details about the long awaited release of the feature he wrote, MY NAME IS BRUCE starring the infamous Bruce Campbell, and details about the many comics projects he’s involved in. He also posted about why this month’s Region 2 PAL release of BSG "Season 4" and "Seasons 1-4 Box" are a bit of a misnomer.

Speaking of DVDs…while we Americans wait for the Region 1 DVDs of Season 4.0 that are coming in January, the Galactica Science blog has transcribed all the deleted scenes included on the Region 2 PAL DVD set (here’s the link to Part 1 of 3).

Mark Verheiden is also busy these days working on scripts for the second half of HEROES third season, subtitled VOLUME 4: FUGITIVES. The show just announced a fun new cast member who will appear in the second half of the season: Zeljko Ivanek, who just won an Emmy for his amazing performance in season one of DAMAGES. (I finally caught up with that show in a marathon this August, wow it was great stuff! DAMAGES season 2, which will include new castmembers William Hurt, Marcia Gay Harden, and Tim Olyphant, begins in early 2009.) After you’ve checked out HEROES on TV, its webisodes, and the massive official site, I highly recommend the blogs by director/producer Greg Beeman, writer/producer Jesse Alexander (who loves fanvids), and "HRG" himself, actor Jack Coleman.

Jane Espenson, when she isn’t writing/producing the BSG movie or the BSG webisodes, or meeting Stephen Colbert, or giving sage advice to budding TV writers, is working on a new BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Season 8 comic book.

Speaking of comics…io9 has a preview of the spin-off miniseries Battlestar Galactica: Ghosts (out now), and Newsarama has an interview with the writers of Battlestar Galactica: Cylon War, a 4-issue miniseries which debuts in January 2009.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA director/producer Michael Rymer, and CAPRICA co-writer Remi Aubuchon, have both signed on to the new Fox TV show PERSONS UNKNOWN, described as a “Mystery revolving around a group of strangers who wake up in the middle of nowhere and try to figure out how they got there.” Rymer will direct the pilot episode, and Aubuchon will be showrunner. (Does this mean anything to the future of CAPRICA as a series? Unknown…)

We had the scoop a while back on Mary McDonnell’s run on GREY’S ANATOMY this fall, and now Mo Ryan has a lot more detail about her character:

Fortunately, we won’t have to wait that long to see Mary McDonnell again. McDonnell...has a new gig on "Grey’s Anatomy," as I reported a few weeks ago. She'll make her "Grey's" debut Nov. 13.

Her character is a doctor named Virginia Dixon, and she’ll appear on “Grey’s” about three or four times this season, according to the network.

Dixon faces a formidable task at Seattle Grace Hospital: She is a surgeon who will do her best to bring “rules and order to the OR” according to ABC. Who better than McDonnell to play a woman faced by a daunting challenge? She’s faced down Cylon armadas, so flirty docs should be no big deal.

In any case, the actress’ “Grey’s” nickname stands at the ready: Some of McDonnell’s “Battlestar” fans nicknamed her “Mary McAwesome” years ago.

Mo also has news about Katee Sackhoff who, in addition to shooting a new pilot LOST AND FOUND with producer Dick (LAW & ORDER) Wolf, will be guest starring in an upcoming episode of LAW & ORDER. It was also recently announced that the very excellent Brian Cox (X-2, DEADWOOD) will co-star in LOST AND FOUND.

Sam Witwer continues his turn as Doomsday on this year’s SMALLVILLE, and I hear things are just getting good on the show. The BSG blog has a bunch of details.

Aaron Douglas spoke recently to the Cort & Fat Boy radio show...his fans are celebrating the recent news that his Canadian TV pilot THE BRIDGE has been picked up for series.

As we mentioned the other day, Stephanie Jacobsen is starting an arc of unknown length over on TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES.

Lucy Lawless will guest on the final season of THE L WORD, which will begin airing on Showtime in January 2009.

In a recent interview with MovieHole, Seth Green reconfirmed that Ron Moore (along with Joss Whedon and Seth MacFarlane) will be making a cameo appearance in the forth season premiere of ROBOT CHICKEN in early 2009. The BSG blog noticed that Katee Sackhoff did some great commentary track work for ROBOT CHICKEN’s latest DVD release.

First Showing and several other bloggers attended a TRICK R TREAT screening in LA this week -- this is a film that Tahmoh Penikett is featured in -- and apparently it is big horror fun. Keep your eyes out for it.

CAPRICA pilot director Jeffrey Reimer is a director/producer on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, one of the best dramas on TV nowadays. In fact Reimer directed the first two wonderful eps this season. The show’s signature style – intimate, with an improvisational feeling and gorgeous cinematography – is based on the movie and TV pilot work by Peter Berg. Berg is the director of, and a producer on, Ron Moore and Michael Taylor’s pilot VIRTUALITY. FNL airs this fall exclusively on DirecTV Network 101, and will run again on NBC in early 2009.

My favorite new show this season, Alan Ball’s TRUE BLOOD, is adding BSG vet Michelle Forbes as a series regular for season 2. Charlaine Harris herself dropped the news on her fansite that Forbes is playing The Maenad, a dangerous and mythical woodland creature. If you want some spoilers about what this character might be up to next season on the show, dig up reviews or synopses for Harris’ second novel, LIVING DEAD IN DALLAS. A peek at what the casting sides allegedly say: “This wild woman is supernatural, articulate and polished. She feeds on the fears of others and is a BIG DEAL in season two. Nudity might be required.” Fun stuff…According to recent announcements, we get our first peek at The Maenad briefly in this season’s finale episode.

One of my other favorite shows, MAD MEN, ends this Sunday. If you’re a fan, don’t forget that Jon Hamm is hosting SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE tomorrow night…and if you live in the New York City area, why not stop by the Basket of Kisses finale episode party here in Manhattan?

Callum Keith Rennie has been a gas as the raunch-soaked and brilliant music producer Lew Ashby on this fall's season 2 of CALIFORNICATION. We're up to ep 205 and he has been in every one of them...my favorite of his scenes thus far involves a shotgun, a hooker and a hair band rolling around in his living room. Lew's house on the show turns out to be the real home of legendary music producer Rick Rubin, according to the production blog.

Although that BSG season 4.5 promo you lucky few got to see at San Diego Comic Con in July has yet to surface elsewhere…we LOST fans have finally got our first taste of new video! Yowza! (Come on SciFi Channel – pony up!)

Congrats to Edward James Olmos for winning the ALMA Award this weekend for Outstanding Actor in a Drama TV Series. You can see him accept his award when the taped show is broadcast on ABC, Friday September 12th. Meanwhile, dryope has posted some nice photos of him at the ceremony. Cross your fingers for Esai Morales, who is nominated for an Imagen Award for Best Supporting Actor on a TV Series. The Imagen winners will be announced on August 21st.

Variety has pieces on Emmy-nominated Drama Series writers this week, including Michael Angeli for BSG's "Six Of One." The article discussing background research includes this quote:

With its outer-space setting, "Battlestar Galactica" is also ripe for research finds, but writer Michael Angeli notes that while science advisers ensure writers adhere to the laws of physics, his research usually involves classical literature, Westerns and history.

"Those have struggles of obsession, survival and possession, which we feel is what the show is really about," Angeli says.

"If we go to the Bible, a Western or the transcripts of the trial for Saddam Hussein -- which we did at the end of season three -- we can look for cultural differences, questions of race, gender, class, conspicuous consumption and sex," he adds. "We like to touch on the idea of what it means to be human."

Sci Fi Wire has a second piece from John Sullivan on the set of the VIRTUALITY pilot, focusing on the characters and plot details. The article is more spoiler-filled than the previous one; if you prefer to come to a new show without too much advance information, as a way of enjoying being surprised, you might want to skip it. Although this part is important:

The show's world is deliberately very small, very claustrophobic. The point of the show is not space adventure or gadgets or cool alien ships: It's more about straight character drama in an SF setting. Virtuality is an ensemble show that's mainly about getting to know the characters aboard Phaeton and seeing how they deal with very intense pressures and unpredictable challenges.

SciFi Wire posted the above shot of The Phaeton, which I have seen on other sci-fi sites a with a "(c) Fox TV" underneath. But I am really not sure this is an actual concept art piece from the show, or some sort of fanart...and SciFi Wire doesn't seem to be sure either. Can anyone out there confirm?

Folks at this month’s GenCon got to preview the new BSG board game from Fantasy Flight Games; this blogger shot some video of gameplay, and this Board Game Geek forum member wrote up both short and long form reviews.

Canada's first Olympic athlete to win a gold medal this summer, wrestler Carol Huynh, is a BSG fan. And so, apparently, is world-reknowned artist Takashi Murakami.

This curious livejournalist fan poked around Amazon UK and found a photo of the UK box art for BSG season 4.0 DVD, slated to hit the street October 8th. She also found that a season 1-4 box set is scheduled for release, and there is already a box art image on Amazon's site. One would assume that would not be released till some time in the second half of 2009. As previously posted, the latest on the US version of season 4.0 is (A RUMOR) that it will debut December 30th. As with all prior DVD releases, the US version is always worth the wait as it will be packed with extras (unlike the bare-bones international DVD versions).

Thanks to fans who post on the battlestar blog, we also learned that Canadian channel SPACE is re-broadcasting all of Seasons 1 through 4, every Monday through Thursday at 2pm and 6pm PT, starting September 8th.

Also, don't forget that the Universal HD Channel here in the states will be running season 4.0 in HD beginning August 30th.

I can tell you that when I asked Jamie Bamber about the last 10 episodes, he was positively effusive. This wasn't just an actor reading his lines flogging the show—he was truly in awe of the final three eps. According to Jamie: "They're amazing. Ron's finale is just sensational. All I can say is they're well-deserving of being the last episodes of Battlestar Galactica." So excited! Also, by the by, Jamie's wife is just about the coolest girl you could ever meet. She's the kind of girl who tells you that you have something in your teeth before you interview her husband and helps you get it out...(Not that that happened to me or anything. No thireee! Wait, thorry...need to get this rathpberry theed out of my teeth...No siree!)

Comic-Con reports, Day One

Our man on the ground in San Diego, Greg Dewar, has begun posting photos in this Sitrep Flickr pool...If any of you folks who are at Comic-Con want to add to the pool, go right ahead, it's open to everyone.

Turns out he is lucky to have arrived on time and in one piece, as many folks (including Mark Verheiden) faced huge delays stuck in traffic caused by highway accidents and...er...railway murder.

Richard Hatch & Bear McCreary

Wired, Discover blog, TV Squad and io9 were at today's BSG 30th Anniversary panel with Richard Hatch, Bear McCreary, Tom DeSanto and Kevin Grazier.

According to io9, DeSanto discussed the aborted Bryan Singer version of BSG being developed with Fox in 2001, and shared concept art and animations:

...The new-old BSG, which would have been a continuation of the original series, was eight weeks away from filming, with sets partially built — when Sept. 11, 2001 happened, and network execs panicked that the story of a Cylon sneak attack was "too close to home."...Singer's production company was working on a $13.5 million backdoor pilot for a new BSG, which would air on Fox and then on the Sci Fi Channel. The episodes would have been letterboxed, and the repeat airings on Sci Fi would have had extra footage. DeSanto said the story of the humans "forgetting their purpose" and living in super-capitalist decadence on New Caprica mirrored what he was seeing of his friends during the tech boom around 1999-2000, with people obsessing about their stock portfolios. And just like the Cylon attacks in the abortive Singer pilot, 9/11 brought people back to a sense of purpose.

Sounds like they screened that hilarious faux documentary that McCreary showed at his Los Angeles concerts recently. Can someone confirm that?


io9 also made it to Kevin Grazier's other panel, in which he discussed the accuracy of the science in BSG:

Grazier said that sometimes the actors on the shows are as rabid about getting the science right as he is: James "Baltar" Callis and [EUREKA's] Joe "Henry Deacon" Morton often do independent research to verify that the science on their respective shows is correct. Apparently Callas was particularly fascinated by whether "black body radiation" was represented accurately.

...One more little tidbit from Grazier had to do with cylon downloading. An audience member asked if there were any rules for cylon downloading. Grazier said there are a few, and that he doesn't see the downloading process as a cylon's entire personality being broadcast at death. "I see it as a live update every day," he explained. So the cylons are downloading daily, and when they die they can use what they've already got backed up. But another panelist issued a warning: "I've been trying to BitTorrent Tricia Helfer and it didn't work."

As for the SCREAM LIKE A GIRL panel with Lucy Lawless, so far only this Spout liveblogging post has appeared. More as it develops.

Another thing I can check off my Bucket List

Wired reports that there is a betting site making odds on The Final Cylon. I guess they aren’t worrying about the kittens. Sigh.

A few more tidbits from all the recent TV network upfronts announcements:

...David Eick has, as was previously rumored, taken the showrunner reigns for the NBC series THE PHILANTHROPIST coming in midseason. The series was originally being written and produced by Tom “OZ” Fontana, who wrote the pilot and several other scripts but has since departed.

...Thanks to Margie at WatchingBSG for the news that LIFE ON MARS has been added to ABC’s '08-09 schedule. The show features Stephanie “Kendra Shaw” Chaves-Jacobsen and as Margie notes, “they gave it the post-GREY’S ANATOMY time slot, which could be great for that show and for Stephanie.”

...All About Tahmoh continues to attentively follow all news on Fox’s DOLLHOUSE, the midseason series that Tahmoh Penikett is co-starring in.

...It’s probably a tad too early, but anyone interested in Ron Moore’s VIRTUALITY should keep an eye on this Fox blog, which will certainly start pumping info if the show gets a green light to go to series. For now, any of you JJ Abrams & Joss Whedon crossover fans should take a look…something is definitely a-brewing over there. I'm still trying to figure out their methodology for post tags...

Lucy Lawless will be giving a free concert in Los Angeles at the Universal City Walk on June 29th. Her fan club will no doubt be covering all the juicy lucy details.

IGN recently spoke to Tricia Helfer…also note that her film WALK ALL OVER ME is now out on DVD. Cinematical has some details, and here’s an interview with the film’s director Robert Cuffley.

Videos you should ask for

Due to popular demand, G4 Network has posted two more videos from the "Music of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA" concerts in LA last month, this time full videos of entire songs. BSG composer Bear McCreary also notes on his blog that all the video from the concert - including the hilarious "documentary" film screened at the shows -- are candidates for inclusion as extras on upcoming BSG DVD sets:

We are in the process of putting together a video of the complete concert and the documentary we premiered. Fear not. You will all get a chance to see this thing. I don’t know how yet… maybe I can convince Universal to include it on the Season 4 DVD, maybe we’ll release it online, maybe I’ll burn DVDs myself and leave them at bus-stops. But, it will get out there, I promise!

In all seriousness, though… some enthusiastic noise from the fan community will really help get this concert footage on the Season 4 DVD. So, if you want to see this, help out by drumming up some support online.

Sounds like something worth writing to NBC Universal's TV on DVD department about...doesn't it?


Meanwhile, for whatever reason, apparently fandom still has not stepped up to give enough pre-orders for production of this cool FedCon DVD set to commence. Come on now, fans of Mary McDonnell, Jamie Bamber, Michelle Forbes, Nicki Clyne and Leah Cairns...send in those pre-orders! They are pretty close but not there yet.

Maybe this will encourage you to take the plunge: the DVD producers have now got a site up (bilingual English/German) with clips of their high-quality interview footage from the con.

All you need to do is send a pre-order email, committing to pay a measly $30/20 Euros for 6 hours of footage! And remember to mention if you want NTSC or PAL DVD format.

A new videoblog, "Space Cowboys," in which BSG "superfan" Brad Paisley and his band do a little cosplay and have a little fun with Aaron Douglas on the BSG set. Lucky, lucky, lucky.

An "enhanced" version of the full episode "He That Believeth In Me," overlaid with Ron Moore's podcast commentary. All podcasts for the first four episodes are now available.

For whatever reason, Hulu is listing "He That Believeth In Me" as expiring in 12 hours. TBD how long full eps will remain on Scifi.com. It's all a grand experiment this year.

Speaking of experimentation: there is more news this week on the NBCU and Apple/iTunes front. Apparently NBCU has begun streaming ad-free Quicktimes of some TV shows (including classic BATTLESTAR GALACTICA) that will play on iPhones and iPod Touches. Streaming only? A resounding MEH.

Let the Virtual Frak Parties Commence!

With any luck and a strong NBCU/Sci Fi Channel server today, some of us will get to watch the season premiere at noon, and the fandom chatter on this episode will commence.

Hopefully all the attention, press and buzz BSG has received over the hiatus will translate into more viewers this season. Certainly this blog has many, many more readers now than a year ago. In honor of any "n00bs" reading this, and/or folks who won’t be attending any Frak Party with friends tonight, let me guide you to some of the virtual parties that will undoubtably be churning away till the sun peeks over the horizon tomorrow morning.

As always, fans from around the globe will be discussing the current episode every Friday on the show’s official Sci Fi Channel board. Episode 4x03’s thread has been opened and discussion will begin in earnest after the live stream today.

Rag Tag Fleet finds Earth, heads straight to New York City

Ain't It Cool News has the first frame grab shot of the Battlestar Galactica cast's visit to David Letterman's show. The piece was taped on Monday here in New York, and airs tonight on CBS.

Looks like episode 4x03 "He That Believeth In Me," will be available to stream on scifi.com as of noon on April 4th...and that casting on the CAPRICA pilot is just getting started. Ron Moore apparently referred to this new series as DALLAS in space.

Season 4 Interviews

Katee Sackhoff was a guest on the morning news on CW11, WPIX New York where she talked a bit about BSG season 4, and about her future plans once Galactica wraps.

Edward James Olmos was interviewed by Lewis Beale of the NY Daily News. Eddie talked about wrapping up BSG as well as his community work.

Sean Elliot of If Magazine talked to Lucy Lawless about her work on season 4.

Sci Fi Channel confirms Letterman

Ten stars of SCI FI Channel's original series Battlestar Galactica will make an appearance on CBS' Late Show With David Letterman to present the Top 10 List on March 19.

They include Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, Katee Sackhoff, Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Tricia Helfer, Grace Park, Michael Hogan, Aaron Douglas and Lucy Lawless. The show airs at 11:35 p.m. ET/PT.

The fourth season of Battlestar Galactica kicks off on March 28 at 10 p.m. ET/PT with two back-to-back half-hour specials, with the first new episode premiering the following week, April 4, 10 p.m.

Sci Fi Channel - Q&A with Cast

The official SciFi.com Battlestar Galactica forum is taking questions from fans for Lucy Lawless, Edward James Olmos and (*glee*) Michael Hogan. The forum says the Q&A will be taped early next week, so get those questions in soon.

Videotaped responses will be posted to the show's official site over the coming weeks.

In Con news, Aaron Douglas has joined the list of BSG cast attending this year’s Dragon Con in August. Tahmoh Penikett, Aaron Douglas and Richard Hatch will attend The Wrath of Con in May.
