CAPRICA & BSG at Nerd Prom (aka Comic-Con) 2010
Maureen Ryan has confirmed with SyFy they are bringing CAPRICA to San Diego Comic-Con this year.
Starz has announced that Lucy Lawless will attend the SPARTACUS: BLOOD & SAND panel, and there is a rumor that James Callis will be attending with the EUREKA panel (he has joined the cast for the new season, which premieres July 9, to play physicist Dr. Grant).
The HAWAII FIVE-O panel will include co-star Grace Park. Writer/producer Mark Verheiden will be there for a panel about his new series FALLEN SKIES, co-produced by HEROES' Greg Beeman and executive produced by Steven Spielberg.
If any of you hear about additional BATTLESTAR GALACTICA alumni at SDCC this year, shout it out in the comments.
For the first time ever I am going to SDCC myself, and will cover as much as I possibly can from the TV and Film worlds over at my new site The FemmeBot. Come check it out!

Comic-Con 2009
The beautiful madness of The Geek Prom, aka San Diego Comic-Con, began last night.
There is a ton of stuff going on that we BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and CAPRICA fans will enjoy hearing about soon enough...not to mention a ton of other things in film and television both. I'm sure a lot of fans who attend will leave their thoughts, photos, videos and love over at the siffy forums and the livejournal community.

May The Toast Be With You, Frakkers
As we round the corner into the last few weeks before this year's San Diego Comic Con (which I will be covering on Twitter and at FanGrrl Magnet if you are interested), Wired announced something hilarious. Apparently the STAR WARS folks figured out a great new merch item for SDCC this year... and it looks vaguely familiar...
Says Wired:
It’ll be a surprise to precisely no one that Lucasfilm leads the vanguard of Comic-Con must-have gimmicks and gadgets. The marketing machine that put the action in action figures will introduce the Star Wars toaster at this year’s convention. The device turns every piece of toast over to the dark side — burning an image of everyone’s favorite Dark Lord of the Sith onto your Wonder-bread. Where else will you get a chance to smudge jam into Darth Vader’s grill?
Umm...the vanguard? LOL. Well, you know what they say about plagiarism, don't you. ;-)
Meanwhile, SciFi SyFy and NBC have announced that there are six special SDCC 09 swag items going on sale at the NBCU store, including a yet-to-be-announced CAPRICA item, this hilarious OFFICE Schrute Farms watch, a great CHUCK polo shirt...and a new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Frakkin Toaster with LED. See the demo vid below:
Keep an eye on NBCU's store blog and twitter feed for news of the SDCC item sale which begins soon.

Dave Howe talks CAPRICA, THE PLAN, and Comic Con
Chicago Tribune writer Maureen Ryan is interviewing Sci Fi (SyFy?) exec Dave Howe today and has twittered a few important factoids:
Sci Fi prez Dave Howe says debut of Caprica, BSG prequel series, is likely to be in January. (tweet)
Sci Fi panels at Comic-Con: Stargate Universe, Caprica, Warehouse 13, Sanctuary, Eureka. BSG movie The Plan "likely" to be there too. (tweet)
The Plan, BSG film, airs in Nov. Also, there *may* be a Battlestar theatrical film in 3-5 years. Not for sure, but possible, sez Dave Howe. (tweet)
Two Comic Con panels? Huzzah! As for a BSG movie, my excitement over that will depend on what sort of movie we are talkin' about. To be continued.
Keep an eye out for a full feature by Ryan over on her site The Watcher...

I'm getting that tingly feeling again...must be time for Comic Con rumors!
First bits and pieces of Comic Con 2009 panel info, both rumored and officially announced, have begun to trickle onto the blogosphere this past week for some of the TV and film projects. I'll be tracking a lot of both over on FanGrrl Magnet if you are curious.
But to the question that you dear readers most want here at Sitrep...what about BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and CAPRICA?
Nothing has been announced by Sci Fi/NBCU yet, but Seat42F says all nets and studios have had their Comic Con meetings and made their decisions. I've been poking some sources hoping for more info. It's a bit soon to do a CAPRICA panel, given production is starting next month, the cast and crew will be busy, and there wouldn't be any new footage in time for the Con.
My money is on a panel for THE PLAN, which airs this
Watch this space...
[Speaking of cons and plans, did you know Ron Moore is the announced Guest Of Honor at this year's London MCM Expo? And that Olmos recently said this about THE PLAN?]

Comic-Con fallout
Fangrrl nicole-anell was kind enough to type up a transcript of the ENTIRE BSG Comic-Con panel. *applause*
There are some fun mentions of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, cylons, BSG fans, Ron Moore and Katee Sackhoff in the Comic-Con videos embedded below, most of which are NSFW...I seem to be on a NSFW kick this week. *shrug*
Also, Seth Green confirms that Ron Moore will appear on the ROBOT CHICKEN season premiere next year...and that Katee Sackhoff will also do some voice work next season.
I am still posting a lot of film/TV Comic-Con vids and miscellany this week over at FanGrrl Magnet; stay tuned.

Off The Wireless (Comic-Con edition)
Discover Magazine’s blog Bad Astronomy just posted the entire “Science of Science Fiction” Con panel video, which includes BATTLESTAR GALACTICA’s science advisor Kevin Grazier.
NBC San Diego has video interviews from Con with Tricia Helfer, Jamie Bamber and Katee Sackhoff. [Hat tip to Morjana.]
The BSG blog tipped us off to the wonderful Con photos by Angel Ceballos. Dryope also published another set of pro pics from the EW/SciFi party at Con. Scarbuck, a regular on the scifi.com BSG forum who is always sharing his photos, has a Con set here.
Right before Con, Comic Mix ran this terrific interview with BSG writer/producer Jane Espenson, talking about BSG, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, and how she got into TV writing in the first place. We got distracted by all the shiny shinies this week and forgot to mention it but check it out cuz it’s great.
A list of many of the Con interviews that have started to appear all over the nettywebs:
- Comic Mix with David Eick.
- TV Talk with Shaun Omac with Tahmoh Penikett.
- Io9 with Tricia Helfer and Tahmoh Penikett.
- TV Squad with Tricia Helfer.
- Shock Till You Drop with Jamie Bamber.
- Comic Mix with Jamie Bamber.
Broadcasting & Cable spoke with Sci Fi Channel honcho David Howe, which has this interesting exchange:
B&C: How has Comic-Con been for you personally?
Howe: I have to say I’m coming back next year. Three years away is too long.
B&C: Are you going to be happy when everyone knows who the twelfth Cylon is? Will you be happy when the secret is finally out?
Howe: No, I won’t be happy because it will be like an end of an era. Nobody wants to see it end. But in the words of Ron Moore, it is kind of gratifying to have closed something, to help finish something, to actually have told the story in a way to reach a satisfactory ending.
B&C: What about the next iteration of “Battlestar?”
Howe: Well, “Caprica’s” now a pilot which will be a backdoor two-hour movie. I haven’t seen it yet, but we’ll get a rough cut in the next couple weeks, but we’re very optimistic that will go to series next year.
B&C: Do you see doing for “Battlestar” what they have done with the Star Wars brand?
Howe: We talk about those things, but I think “Battlestar” is such an important landmark show it won’t ever die. So it will be kept alive either through ongoing movies, potentially some sort of feature, animated shows. All of those things are up for grabs.
Red Eye Chicago is the Tribune paper that allowed Starbuck fans to vote her the Best Character on TV last year. At Con, their reporter found Katee and gave her a copy of the cover showing her win, and they also interviewed her at a roundtable and got an interesting sort-of-spoiler out of Katee. About a necklace. I give it a 3 out of 10 for vagueness, though it is worrying. Did you know that in this year’s Red Eye contest, Buffy The Vampire Slayer beat out Batman and Superman to be crowned Best Superhero? Pretty impressive. Meanwhile, FlickScribe has some lovely photos of La Sackhoff from backstage after the con panel.
This Xena fansite has more links for Lucy Lawless (and Sam Raimi) at Con.
I believe we already gave you most of the BSG Con panel recaps earlier. But check out Grant Gould’s con experience, The Televisionary’s panel recap, and CHUD’s recap with a ton of photos. Geekadelphia links to a con recap & COOL SEASON TWO DVD DEALS. This fan has some more great photos.

The entire SMALLVILLE Con panel video is now online, and Sam Witwer was there. Watch With Kristen recently spoke to Witwer about his new role on the show as superbad Doomsday.
Meanwhile...back on the rest of the internets...Galactica.TV has new interviews up with BSG visionary producer/director Michael Rymer, and actors Kate “Ellen Tigh” Vernon and Bodie “Hot Dog” Olmos.
Syfy Portal talked to BSG/ST: DS9 actress Nana Visitor about her experience shooting the season four ep "Faith."
Here’s a brief glimpse of Bear McCreary hanging out with Shirley Manson on the set of TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES, in a video where the cast and crew is congradulating their special effects and stunts guys on Emmy nominations:

Wired posted more details of how Freema Ageyman and Jamie Bamber got their jobs on LAW & ORDER: LONDON.
While Sci Fi Channel announces their continued success getting young and female viewers to come into the fold, New York Magazine puts BATTLESTAR GALACTICA on their “SHOWS YOU SHOULD WATCH” index and illustrates the various things that it, MAD MEN, THE WIRE, LOST, THE SOPRANOS, and other must-see TV has in common.
A press release is out announcing the broadcast of BSG season 4 on the Uni HD channel beginning August 30th, which is later than previously announced on UHD's web site.

Study The Classics
Faithful Sitrep reader and eagle eyed BSG fan Wendy Towne, points to an interview with Ronald D. Moore in Agent DVD by John Latchem, about what is coming along for BSG in home video, new webisodes, and extended cuts of episodes in the second half of season 4. Excerpts follow:
The first 10 episodes of the fourth season recently aired and are likely to see a home video release later this year in anticipation of the final stretch of episodes, which Moore says will answer a lot of the questions raised during the first three seasons.
In the lead-up to the final episodes, Moore says the production team will create a new series of online shorts, similar to “The Resistance” webisodes that were made before the third season. Unlike “The Resistance,” the new webisodes will not take place between the episodes, but will go back and explain things that happened earlier during the course of the show. In this sense, Moore says, the shorts will serve a function similar to the Razor direct-to-DVD movie produced last year.
Also, Moore says the eventual DVD release of the final half of the fourth season should include a longer version of an episode he directed, called “The Disquiet That Follows My Soul.”
“We’ll probably do an extended cut of that with a new commentary,” Moore says. “And I imagine we’ll do a new cut of the finale.”
To follow “Galactica,” Moore is developing a pilot for Fox called “Virtuality,” about astronauts on a 10-year mission. He also has signed to do a trilogy of sci-fi movies for United Artists and is preparing what he calls a companion piece to John Carpenter’s The Thing.
But Moore is not completely abandoning the “Galactica” universe. Production is underway on a spinoff prequel, called “Caprica,” which delves into the origins of the robotic Cylons and the political rivalry between two families. The cast includes Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Polly Walker and Paula Malcomson.
“It’s coming together great,” Moore says. “It’s a very different time and a very different setting. It’s not about space, but about these families and their machinations.”
Justine of All About Tahmoh Penikett found a series of amazing pro photos taken of the BSG cast at Comic Con.
Crazyvictoria on the BSG Blog has an update and photos of upcoming BSG action figures, including Adama and Roslin figures, and figures tied to RAZOR.
Laura Bramley of Hamilton College reports on a new Battlestar Galactica academic study:
Texts like the Iliad may be old, but they are called classics precisely because they are timeless, turning up over and over again – sometimes in unusual places. Christopher Bouton (class of'09), a rising senior from Beverly, Mass., is spending the summer researching the connections between Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, Virgil's Aeneid, and two slightly more recent productions: "Blade Runner" by Ridley Scott and the television series "Battlestar Galactica" by Ronald Moore.
Bouton is collaborating with Winslow Professor of Classics Carl. A. Rubino on the project, which is funded by the Emerson Foundation Grant program. Created in 1997, the program was designed to provide students with significant opportunities to work collaboratively with faculty members, researching an area of interest. The students will make public presentations of their research throughout the academic year.
A history major with a minor in classics, Bouton is no stranger to research. Last summer, he won a fellowship from the Society of Historians of the Early American Republic, which enabled him to attend an intensive three week program along with nine students from other colleges. Bouton worked with professors to examine school integration in Nantucket in the 1840s, a project that will be the basis of his senior thesis.
This summer the work is slightly different, however. Bouton has already studied modern ties to the Iliad, the Odyssey and the Aeneid in Rubino's "Heroism, Ancient and Modern" course, and he says that studying "Blade Runner" and "Battlestar Galactica" is very different kind of research from his work about Nantucket schools. "Listening to dialogue and watching action is much more engaging than looking at microfilm," he comments. At the same time, doing research on popular media brings its own challenges, one of which is making sure that the research is relevant to others. Bouton says he was drawn to studying "Blade Runner" and "Battlestar Galactica" because of his own interest in the productions, but to pursue a research project, it was important to have a broader underlying motivation than mere fandom.
That foundation lies in thematic connections on issues such as the nature of humanity and heroism. In the classics, explains Bouton, the characters are set apart from normal humanity, the "universal us," and the figures of the Iliad seem to be superhuman. "We get the sense that this is a story, but this isn't us," he says. In the dystopian future of "Blade Runner" and the world of "Battlestar Galactica," those same questions resurface, since each production features a small population of isolated humans in surroundings dominated by human-seeming robots. The classical themes turn into a discussion of what makes humanity unique when it can be simulated almost exactly by machines.
Now beginning the writing phase of his project, Bouton says that it has allowed him to extend his knowledge of the classics, something that he will not be able to pursue after leaving Hamilton, since he plans to attend graduate school and earn a Ph.D. in history. The chance to follow diverse interests is one of the reasons he came to Hamilton, he says, and his research this summer has been an opportunity to do just that.
I'd love to see the results of that research.

Did any of you con-goers spot this Phaeton bag at SDCC, the subtle first move in VIRTUALITY's marketing? We are still roaming the net seeking reports of Ron Moore's other panel at the con, so if you were at the Saturday night TV Guide: Hot List panel, perhaps you could leave a comment here...

Entire BSG 2008 Comic-Con panel video
The entire BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2008 Comic-Con panel is now online. Warning for adult language. Thanks Mr. Smith!
Mark Verheiden describes the event thusly:
Jam packed as usual with literally thousands of enthusiastic fans. Kevin Smith was a funny and blisteringly profane toast-master who elicited a lot of good stuff from the assembled cast. Plus there was a trailer with some new scenes from the next bunch of shows (with a lot of material from the episode I wrote, he notes proudly). It's always amazing to feel the intensity of the crowd at these events.
I know a lot of you are wondering when this 4.5 promo is going to leak to the nettywebs...well I say, we shall see. The footage from last year's Con, as well as that shown at the Dome event last year, never made it onto the web. So...we'll see what happens this time.
Oh, and SciFi.com? Your lack of video embedding code is so 2006. You slay me.
[If you're interested, all of Sci Fi Channel's panels are also posted now, via this Comic-Con page.]
