Cast news & vids

More news and vids to tide you over as we count down the days till the RAZOR mini-sodes begin airing during FLASH GORDON this Friday night (October 5th)...

WALK ALL OVER ME, the feature co-starring Leelee Sobieski and Tricia Helfer, made a US distribution deal after its Toronto Film Festival screenings, with The Weinstein Company. Check out the trailer and photos via Mad About Movies.

TV Guide interviewed Katee Sackhoff on the red carpets after the Emmys.

Entertainment Weekly has posted some video bites from the SDCC EW/SciFi party featuring Katee Sackhoff, Mary McDonnell, Tricia Helfer and other partygoers (mild spoilers near the end).

Aaron Douglas has a guest role on the 5th episode of the delightful new CW series REAPER, airing October 23rd [via The Chief's Deck].

Lucy Lawless will appear as herself on the October 21st episode of CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM on HBO. Here's a few great bits of her recent interview with TV Guide...

TVGuide.com: What about your stint on Curb Your Enthusiasm? Word is, Larry David ignores his guest stars to the point of rudeness.

Lawless: He's quiet and standoffish and doesn't really want to say hello or anything, but I was determined to be as obnoxious as possible. When I shot the episode, I had just received the new Xena [greeting] card that Hallmark puts out, so I wrote on it "Welcome to the Lucy Lawless Experience" and gave it to Larry. You open it up and it screams out the Xena war cry. He loved me ever after. So my advice to anyone trying to get on Larry's good side: Have your own Hallmark card.

[snip]

TVGuide.com: The fans love that you keep returning to the sci-fi/fantasy fold. You don't forget them. You keep showing up at Comic-Con. You give back, baby!

Lawless: You know what's crazy? The mainstream world doesn't understand how big the underground is or that there's such great longevity to be had there. That audience knows me. They get me. They're good to me. They're stickin' with me and I'm stickin' with them. I love my geek world!

Spoil me, baby.

For you spoiler hounds: livejournalist wisteria has rounded up every big and little BSG spoiler she could get her hands on for RAZOR and the rest of S4 (and is looking for any others you got).

Razor Flashbacks

JFC "Series of Dreams"

Battlestar Galactica hasn't been the only show to use a Bob Dylan song in a finale recently. HBO's cancelled mystical surfing epic John From Cincinnati used Dylan's Series of Dreams in the opening scenes of its last episode:

A Very Good Start...

SyFy Portal reports that BIONIC WOMAN drew very good ratings on its premiere - coming in higher than Monday's HEROES season 2 premiere, and garnering the best 18-49 y.o. demo ratings for that timeslot since the 1999 premiere of THE WEST WING.

Nice job folks.

Bear McCreary composed the music for this Smirnoff advert.

In more Bear news, the Battlestar Galactica season 3 soundtrack album is now listed on Amazon.com as coming out on October 23rd.

Ask Ausiello Spoiler

Here's a spoiler bit from the most recent Ask Ausiello column in TV Guide:

Question: Can I please get some Battlestar Galactica scoop? — Theresa

Ausiello: I'm hearing that the climax of the upcoming Razor telepic is, to quote a BSG insider, "probably the best BSG ending since Boomer walked onto Ragnar Station with the other Cylons at the end of the miniseries." All I'll say is it involves someone uttering the following words: "*a*a ****c* **** **ad t*e ****n **** ** i** **d. *** is the ****** ** *** ***c*l****, the ********* ** *****. **** must *** ****** ***."

I'd like to buy a vowel Pat and Vanna....

Happy Bionic Wednesday

Hope you all are getting your hiatus-busting fix of BIONIC WOMAN tonight on NBC – if you haven’t already downloaded it, On-Demanded it, or Amazon-Unboxed it.

I am inspired by what The L.A. Times is saying about the show...

Dark in mood and tone…BIONIC WOMAN owes much to the popularity of the graphic novel, the noir sci-fi sensibilities of Philip K. Dick and perhaps Angelina Jolie. None of which is a bad thing. This is the post-feminist, post-9/11 bionic woman -- not only doesn't she need any help, she wouldn't trust it if it were offered. But that won't keep her from getting the job done.

In other words, it's not your mother's BIONIC WOMAN. It's much, much better.

With her big blue eyes and fair childlike face, Michelle Ryan, recently seen in JEKYLL, is perfect as an everywoman upon whom kick-ass has been thrust.

[snip]

Like any good sci-fi tale, BIONIC reflects the fears and longings of the present, and as we have been told often in other contexts, the current mood of the country is something other than optimistic. Here, those anxieties are boiled down to a modern arms, and legs, race. The world is much further ahead technologically than it wants to admit, Will tells Jaime. The only question is who controls the goodies, and to what end.

...as well as Slate Magazine (SPOILER ALERT)...
Much like LA FEMME NIKITA and ALIAS’ Syndey Bristow, Jamie's simultaneously a babe in peril and a woman in charge, and Michelle Ryan catches the role's film-noir shades and comic-book angles with all due verve. It's embarrassingly easy to develop a crush on the heroine, and that's partly because she's matched against a worthy foe. Her name is Sarah Corvus—who's actually the first bionic woman, an uncontrollable prototype returned to bedevil Jaime and her superior—and, as played by BATTLESTAR GALACTICA’S Katee Sackhoff, she's the most thrilling villain network TV has seen in some time.

Goody!

Meanwhile livejournalist ez-as-pi found some great behind-the-scenes and Comic Con clips of the BIONIC cast. And don’t forget to check Katee out on Cort and Fatboy tonight.

It Needs More Katee

In her review of the debut of NBC's Bionic Woman, Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune, says the show needs more of Katee Sackhoff:

There are moments when “Bionic Woman” (8 p.m. Wednesday, WMAQ-Ch. 5), the disappointingly average remake of the Lindsay Wagner vehicle from the ’70s, comes to life.

They’re when Katee Sackhoff (who plays Kara “Starbuck” Thrace on “Battlestar Galactica”) is on the screen. The catch: Sackhoff isn’t playing the show’s main character.

Jaime Sommers is played by English actress Michelle Ryan, and every time she and Sackhoff are together, I wished that the producers had waited one more season to make “Bionic Woman.”

If they’d held off, Sackhoff, who finishes “Battlestar” in early 2008, could have played Sommers. But even then, she would have had to work mightily to overcome the script’s leaden dialogue and dour tone.

Sackhoff’s recurring character is Sarah Corvus, another bionic woman who went rogue. Playing her as a lady with a penchant for bright red lipstick and melodramatic rebellion, Sackhoff bites into the villainess role with glee. In her scenes, “Bionic Woman” is every bit the slightly campy, action-oriented, B-grade escapism-fest I wanted it to be.

In other Katee news, she performed some voice work for the new XBox 360 game, "Halo 3". Also doing some voice acting in Halo 3 are actors from Firefly, Nathan Fillion (Malcolm Reynolds in Firefly), Adam Baldwin (Jayne Cobb in Firefly), Alan Tudyk (Wash in Firefly)

Welcome back, you're frakked.

Hi folks, I've just returned from a lovely week on the Maine coastline. Ahhhh, lobster rolls.

Let me restart my posting with a jump back, for a second look at something Logan put up last week: this link to TVGuide.com talking about the 10/year/10 split of seasons 4.0 & 4.5. Can we now note the other tidbit which is a-bit-too-casually dropped by TV Guide: the Season 3 DVDs are not coming out in the USA until SPRING 2008?

Gulp.

Visitor Set To Visit

Maureen Ryan in the Chicago Tribune "Watcher" blog reveals details about Nana Visitor's guest staring role on Battlestar Galactica's season 4 episode, "Faith" where Visitor, who played Col. Kira on Star Trek Deep Space Nine, plays a cancer patient that befriends Laura Roslin.

A Rich Television Age

The New York Times has an interesting article by Alessandra Stanley about all the cool and smart TV shows around these days, that inspire conversation, like Battlestar Galactica, Lost, Mad Men, House, and others:

It’s a rich television age and a demanding one. The selection is now so plentiful and fragmented and good. And deciding among hundreds of channels, on-demand options, DVR, Internet streaming and iPhones requires so much research, planning and commitment that viewers have become proprietary about their choices. Alliances are formed, and so are antipathies. Snobbery takes root. Preferences turn totemic. The mass audience splintered long ago; now viewers are divided into tribes with their own rituals and rites of passage.

....Science fiction is one thing: “Battlestar Galactica” has intellectual cachet.

“The humans are pagan polytheists and the robots are monotheists, whose divine jihad is against the humans (even though the former know that the latter created them),” Anthony Gottlieb, the author of “The Dream of Reason: A History of Philosophy from the Greeks to the Renaissance,” explained off the top of his Blackberry from an airport baggage claim. “There’s a curious mix of high-tech and superstition and scriptural fundamentalism (which interestingly suggests that religion is ineradicable, as today’s theorists of secularism are increasingly saying).”

Mr. Gottlieb likes the philosophical puzzles (“Some of the robots think they are human, and some of the humans fear they may be robots”) as well as the way the show switches sympathies back and forth from democracy to dictatorship. He really had only one objection. “There’s lots of romance, though this bores me,” he typed. “Less kissing, more killing is a frequent internal refrain of mine.”

This summer “Mad Men,” rippled across my world in ever-widening circles of connoisseurship. We were entranced by the amber-colored look at the early 1960s, when men drank martinis at lunch, and housewives smoked at P.T.A. meetings, and the battle between the sexes had barely begun. Michael Hainey, the deputy editor of GQ, is enamored of the way the series captures the finer details in a lost moment of American overconfidence. “It’s a period piece that’s about right now,” Mr. Hainey explained. He also loves the show’s look and feel, which he described as “ ‘The Apartment’ meets ‘The Spy Who Came in From the Cold.’ ”

...Before the Internet, iPhones and flash drives, people jousted over who was into the Pixies when they were still a garage band or who could most lengthily argue the merits of Oasis versus Blur. Now, for all but hardcore rock aficionados, one-upmanship is more likely to center around a television series — like metaphysical clues buried in “Lost,” whether the current “Battlestar Galactica” is an affront to the 1978 original (some bloggers sneeringly refer to the current incarnation as Gino, short for “Galactica in name only” ) or who discovered “Flight of the Conchords” when it was a comedy team performing in concerts, not an HBO series.

Television used to be dismissed by elitists as the idiot box, a sea of mediocrity that drowns thought and intelligent debate. Now people who ignore its pools and eddies of excellence do so at their own peril. They are missing out on the main topic of conversation at their own table.

Strike?

SyFy Portal confirms some of the speculation that the reason Sc-Fi Channel might want to split up the final season of BSG is due to the possible writers and actors strikes. The networks want to stockpile projects so they can get stuff on the air in the event of the work stoppage. This is also why Sci-Fi seems to have a renewed interest in making the "Caprica" pilot, since it's a script they already have in hand.

Following up on Mark Verheiden's blog post linked below, Jane Espenson, co-exec producer and writer on Battlestar Galactica, also writes about working in Writers' Rooms on her blog.

Inside the Writers Room

Battlestar Galactica executive producer Mark Verheiden details on his blog how things work inside BSG's Writers Room.

Razor cover, 1980, and Season 4 Info.

The final and revised art work for "Razor" is now online and on the Amazon sale page, showing the Pegasus crest with the proper Battlestar Group number of BSG 62.

Also, TV Shows on DVD reports that Galactica 1980 is coming to DVD.

In other news, TV Guide reports on the possibility of Season 4 being split into two 10 episode runs.

Also, Ron Moore spoke to James Hibberd at TV Week:

"It doesn't affect my job either way since we're shooting it straight through," creator Ronald Moore told TVWeek. "It might be better to get it all done [in the same year] for the fans so they don't have to wait." And if Moore's sentiments are correct and the show is split, Sci-Fi might have a riot on its hands. "When people see the ending of the 10th episode, they're going to freak out," he said.
About the possible break, TVWeek reports:
Sci Fi executives attending the NBC Universal pre-Emmy party at Spago in Beverly Hills Saturday said the decision whether to split the final season was an ongoing discussion, but at least one network programmer was firmly against the idea.

As is often the case with the lavishly produced series, the issue is “the money people,” as one executive put it. Since “Battlestar” eats a considerable portion of the Sci Fi programming budget, the network might be forced to spread the resulting product across two seasons.
And, Maureen Ryan and SyFy Portal report on the possibility that the BSG spin off "Caprica" is being considered by Sci-Fi once again.

Also the Battlestar Blog has some photos of Katee Sackhoff at the TV Guide post Emmy party.

Dear Ron and Felix

We know you already know this guys, but let's just say it aloud for the record:

'Tis better to have run against the best of the best, and lost, than never to have run at all.

And actually the situation for genre shows has improved in terms of getting noticed by the Emmys, with the always excellent Terry O'Quinn winning for Lost, and nominations for Heroes, etc.

Lets hope next year will be BSG's year with nominations for Mary McDonnell, Edward James Olmos, Katee Sackhoff along with wins for writing and directing.

At least Battlestar Galactica finally got to take home its long deserved SFX Emmy.

Here's the complete list of winners from last night, and Maureen Ryan's review of what was a pretty weird awards show.

Mark Verheiden provides a general update from the Battlestar trenches.

Mrs. Ron

Ron Moore's wife Terry Moore, "Mrs. Ron" has posted quite a bit about the possible split of season 4's run on the Sci-Fi Battlestar Galactica Forum.

If you sort through all the messages it seems clear that Sci-Fi hasn't made any decision yet, and is still studying the options.

All we know for certain is that BSG has a forth season, its final season, and will be made up of 22 hours, which includes 20 episodes, and the 2 hour Razor movie.

So, all that is up in the air is how the corporate folks at Sci-Fi decide how long of a break there will be between episode 10 and 11.

More on the possible gap

SyFy Portal talked to BSG producer/writer David Weddle about the possible gap between episodes 10 and 11 of season 4.

"We were told that SciFi was thinking about splitting the final season, but we do not know how long the gap in that split will be," producer David Weddle told SyFy Portal's Michael Hinman. "As far as I know, SciFi has not decided yet. The SciFi Channel executives are the only ones who will be able to answer that question, once they've arrived at a decision."
Weddle also told SyFy Portal:
"The writing staff just spent three days in a cabin in Lake Tahoe mapping out the final episodes of the show," Weddle said. "We now know how it will end and what each major character's journey will be, though the specifics may go through many changes between now and the conclusion of shooting in March. It was both exhilarating and sad at the end of those three days in Tahoe."

The writing staff actually recorded a podcast on the final night at the cabin talking abut writing for the show, and their thoughts on how it was ending.

"Needless to say, it was an emotionally charged session that will eventually be released online and, I believe, on the DVDs.

Season 4 Split in Two?

Maureen Ryan in the Chicago Tribune has the latest on the rumor that Sci-Fi Channel might split up season 4 with a break coming after the first 10 episodes air in 2008 -- a break that could last as long as a year. Maureen writes in part:

“I do not know what Sci Fi is planning to do, nor does Ron, at this point. They are discussing options,” Terry Moore, the wife of “Battlestar Galactica” executive producer and showrunner Ron Moore, wrote on the [Sci-Fi.com] message board.

“I understand [fan’s concerns], and hope you know that this decision, whatever it ends up being, is in the hands of the network,” Moore said at another point.

Personally, I hope the network does the right thing by its flagship show. I can understand Sci Fi Channel wanting to hang on to its most prestigious property for as long as possible. But I think a wait of a year between the first batch of Season 4 episodes and the second batch would be an enormous mistake.

Imagine you’re right in the middle of the final Harry Potter book – but then someone takes it away from you and you’re denied the pleasure of reading the concluding chapters. For a year.

You’d be understandably frustrated....

A break of a few months – that I can live with (as can most fans, I’d imagine). But not seeing the concluding scenes of the show for more than year and half? That would just be mean to fans, and it would do a disservice to a terrific show that has won prestige, awards and acres of acclaim for the network.

Mad Men: Best show of the summer

So, it's been a long summer without any BSG to watch, and you're looking for something good on TV... Might I suggest you check out the best show of the summer, the awesome new series, Mad Men on AMC.

AMC has a Mad Men marathon of the first seven episodes Sunday September 2 at 10:00 a.m. / 9:00 am central/mountain time.

The only thing Mad Men has in common with Battlestar Galactica is great writing, acting, and stunning consistency in delivering quality television week after week.

Two Cool BSG Videos

Perhaps this is the best Lee centric BSG music video ever.

Happy Labor Day weekend...
