Full Ep: S4 x 08 "Faith"

The full episode is up on Hulu and Scifi.com. Note that the episodes are going to expire on both locations, they are not staying up indefinitely. S4 x 03 "He That Believeth In Me" just got yanked from both sites; now the only way to see it is with commentary here. *As of 12:30pm EDT today, the commentary link is not working. But have faith.

I'm putting a few impressions in the comments here. I have questions, if any of you can answer without feeding too many future spoilers, come on down...

This week and last week played like a two parter, and the sum of the whole was great. Although between this and the rubik's cube of LOST this month, my head is hurting trying to keep track of what is going on in both these shows!

The updated hybrid prophecy? Titillating.

Also love how Leoben is coming out looking like a good guy at this point. I still don't trust him one tiny bit.

The effects shots when their raptor is floating through the decimated basestars, and Kara sees her vision source, were so so gorgeous.

My RCN cable connection to standard-def Sci Fi Channel has been awful both this week and last. It keeps pixelating throughout the episode, going from lowres to highres, so DarthMojo - I didn't get to see some of your beautiful works the way they're meant to be seen. Sigh.

Loved the double murder scene next to the raptor parked on the basestar - tense.

And bald Roslin? Well it is disturbing...but wasn't she just heartbreaking and lovely in her sick bay scenes this week. Also ejoyed the constant stream of Baltar in the background there...and this idea that the Cylon God might be a better savior for dying humans than any of the Human Gods in their pantheon.

The look on Kara's face once the hybrid shared her bad news. Oooooh. What will she do now? Stay with the cylons? Sabotage her own plans? Quit the fleet and go be Mr. Lee Adama's political assistant and barmaid? ;)

For some reason those crayon doodles that Hera is doing of Number Six, in the promo for next week, made me laugh. Really hard. Sorry but couldn't help it!

Meanwhile: PLEASE PUT YOUR HAND IN THE GOO, ANDERS! DO IT!!! LOL

My questions for the floor, please try to keep spoilers to a minimum with your answers:

Is there anything in cylon prophecy about an angel leading them somewhere? I can't recall.

In the human prophecy, I know there's a dying leader...but don't they TOO have someone else prophesized to lead them? Can someone remind me of the text of the prophecy? I am sadly rusty at this point.

Why do you think the dying Sharon (the one that Anders leaned over while she died) was apologizing to Athena? Why does Athena react the way she does?

The hybrid tells Kara, "you will lead them all to their end." Do we think she is still talking about humans here?

Where is D'Anna being kept? Has it been mentioned? Do the Sixes/Leobens/Sharons know?

For your reference, in the Hulu embed, the hybrid talks to Kara at 29:30, and Natalie interprets at 36:00.

i liked this one, between last week and this week, the BSG I liked is back.

the hybrid's prophecy revealed a number of things, chief among them being the fact that Laura is the one who can see "the opera house" which we've seen before.

then there is the home of the 13th. now it could be the 13th tribe but in a deleted scene, the cylons were talking about Hera's name and how it should be "13" and little Hera (and I guess her friend, 14 aka Nick Tyrol) live in the fleet.

I had to watch this on hulu as I couldnt' wait for BT but I think I'm going to go find it since the hulu resolution is not so great.

I agree about the brain hurt...between this week's LOST and all that's going on there, and all that's going on here, I have to take a break and watch something silly like 30 Rock to maintain some sanity!

oh and one other thing...that scene where a 6 killed whatshername...I think in that one moment the futility of revenge and the like was explored in a way that I 've never seen before.

When the Six said "I never did anything to her, I was just working in the water treatment plant and she killed me" and couldn't shake the experience of a death (even though she was alive) was kinda weird. THen she kills whatshername, and yet nothing really changes. Props to Cylon Anders for wanting to cap her, but in the end, it's Natalie who does it and you sat there, seeing these two dead people and that's it, they're gone , and even killing the Six isn't brining whatshername back.

I was like "wow!"

The extended Razor prophecy says something about people 'gathered on the wings of an angel'.

Where is D'Anna being kept? Has it been mentioned? Do the Sixes/Leobens/Sharons know?

D'Anna is at the core resurrection site, the site which allows Cylons to resurrect.

Next week there is a big voyage to it.

A few other things that really jumped out at me:

1. part of the hybrid prophecy says something like "the 5 from the 13" -- in other words, the Final Five are actually from Earth. What the frak? I was really disappointed at the end of last season when they revealed 4 of the final five in one fell swoop, and really thought it was a red herring until the start of this season. But my gods, Moore et. al. are really moving things around just when I thought it might become predictable. This show is genius, genius, genius.

2. Anders and the basestar. He really wanted to go, and it seemed that protecting Kara was just an excuse. He is really, really curious. Anders was horrified that he held the gun that shot a cylon. When he sees that the reaction of the dying Sharon is the same as that of a dying human something seems to click for him, and his comforting of her -- especially the "I'm here for you" line -- is absolutely wonderful. I had always considered Anders an interesting but relatively minor character, but it looks like it is actually him who might end up being a crucial bridge between cylon and human...

3. I think that there are a whole bunch of other clues in the hybrid's banter. I can't remember all of them, but "the toy soldier becomes pliant" jumped out at me. Is that Adama? Is this the hybrid saying that he will quickly agree to alliance with these cylons? Or is the "toy" soldier Anders? (He isn't really human; he isn't really a soldier; and maybe what I mention above is his becoming "pliant".) Or is it Tigh? Or Lee? Or was this just nonsense...?

4. Along the same lines, "they will send their best to die against our hulls"??? Will the Galactica immediately attack the basestar when it appears, and will we lose someone important in the attack? Yeah, there is cearly something going on with other parts of the hybrid's monologue... She is part control system, part Greek chorus.

5. the last shot of Laura at the dying woman's bedside: the Virgin Mary?

This is easily the best show that I have ever seen on TV. My only complaint is that there is absolutely no justification that we only get one hour of BSG goodness a week. Why must the gods be so cruel?

Oh one more question: In the raptor, when Kara says: "This is it, this is the place. I can hear it!" ... does Leoben respond: "The unstruck music vibrates in all of us - few can hear it. Kara is one of the few."

Unstruck. Did I get that right?

Hey, just found your site a week ago. It's very illuminating. I love discussing the theories with fellow BSG fans.

I don't really have much to add. I, too, was struck by the 5 from 13 comment.

My question: When I first saw the damaged Base Ship, I automatically thought it was one of the light ships from the original series. Was this coincidental or intentional?

Hi. I'm a regular reader here. I was going through the comments, and someone mentioned deleted scenes. That got me wondering... are there already deleted scenes from season 4 episodes? If yes, are they only available on hulu, or can we find them somewhere else?
Thanks for the help!

Syrin, there are no S4 deleted scenes available yet, on Hulu or anywhere else. :(

Greg, "futility of revenge" -- I like that, it's a great point about the Six/Barolay scene. Neither of their deaths achieved anything to help the other one. (I also thought it was interesting to see a Cylon express *exactly* what the humans are feeling, unable to work alongside the very people who caused them so much pain.)

ProgGrrl, I wanted Anders to put his hand in the goo also! I also giggled and squeed over the Hera's artwork in the promo. (Does this mean Hera has a HeadSix???)

To one of your questions: I'm not sure, but I *think* the dying Eight saw that Sharon was right about her "pick a side" comment earlier and regretted the Yay Mutiny! thing. But it's also Athena's determined side-picking that keeps her from touching her copy's hand. I think a lot of this episode showed how Athena has a lot of wariness and resentment toward the place she came from and she resists the idea of being 'one of them' again (ironically a lot like Boomer in season one).

Also, I'm pretty sure it was already mentioned that D'Anna is in the "Resurrection Hub" whatever that turns out to be. It's where Natalie and the others thought they were going when they were attacked.

Yes, #3 D'Anna is boxed at the Resurrection Hub which will be a major plot point upcoming.

This is the best episode this season (so far) and one of the best of the series. Mary McDonnell's gifts as an actress defy belief - what nuance, what depth. And Michael Trucco - who knew his acting was up to the task of the complex role they are shaping for him. His performance was a revelation this episode.

@everyone: thanks...food for thought.

@greg: you just reminded me: SIX KISSED HERSELF. *dies*

I found the crayon Six drawings creepy, but that could be the fact that I have a four year old who compulsively draws people for me....and bald Roslin was hard to take. She looked like a Newcomer. But the scene with Bill and her in the middle of the night? Blew me away, how far their relationship has come and how well played it is by EJO and MM!

I found myself wondering if the when the dying eight reached out to Athena, if it was some cylon method of transferring knowledge or memories or one last moment of communion.

I also found myself thinking of Leoben's last few moments on Galactica in Season One. Right before Roslin had him spaced, he reached out to Kara - putting his hand up on the glass separator, and she reached out and matched her fingers to his on the other side.

I was right about the stars in Kara's painting being top down depictions of cylon basestars! woot!

Hybrid's statement:

It is important to note the specific choice of words. She says to Kara, "You will lead them all to their end."

All means everybody and everybody can't die or the story cannot complete or cycle through again.

End is not the same as death. It could be that Kara leads them all to the end of their collective journey.

What has not been answered is why the Cylons want to go to Earth at all, and why now?

After rewatching all of the episodes from the first 3 seasons to refresh my memory for the 4th, it is so painful for me to watch these episodes parcelled out once a week with nearly 20 minutes of commercial interruptions. They lose some power. When a commerical break comes on, I'm quick to push the mute button so the thoughts and feelings I get from the show don't get ruined by, say, a screechy Arby's commerical. I always have to go back to SciFi.com the next day to rewatch the show too, just to take everything in more clearly.

I am so pleased with how the Anders character is developing. Although all of the 4 Finals are experiencing their foretold "new clarity" in their own ways, it is Anders, somehow, who now seems to personify the good in humanity.

Cylons don't truly understand mortality, as evidenced by all of Natalie's poor decisions, even through this episode. Each of her orders are easily refuted with the counterpoint that, "If we do that, we will all die." In this episode, it is the human beings who educate the cylons on how to make decisions when your life is at stake.

It is beautifully ironic, then, that it is a cylon - Anders - who comforts the mortally wounded Sharon through her death. He has lived as a human being, and he has come to terms with his mortality to some extent as do all human beings. Natalie and Leoben don't even know what to make of Sharon's "looking past" them, but Anders understands and, ultimately, does what is good and what is right: care for her by simply holding her and saying, "It's OK. I'm with you".

Interesting comments, all. I was just wondering if anyone else thought it would have been fitting for Barolay (a.k.a. whatshername) to have slipped on a red ensign uniform as she joined the Raptor excursion. You just /knew/ her death was inevitable.

Also...Mary's performance in this episode was award worthy.

ProgGrrl said...

Further confirmation of the "unstruck music" dialogue on bsg blog here.

BTW, isn't it interesting to contrast this with what Baltar said to Tory during Six of One. Hmmm...

@dave: I can't really consider Barolay a 'red shirt' since we've seen her many times over the past seasons as a friend of Anders and member of his band of SeaHawks-guerillas.

My main fear was that all of a sudden we have this character who is getting lines and part of a main storyline but hasn't really been featured before and *surprise* she is the last cylon. So it was a relief for me when she died.
