United Nations Panel. Yes, you read that right.

You know very little can surprise me about our beloved show anymore... especially after this past year and the various goings-on, announcements, etc. Yet I continue to be amazed by where it all goes some days.

News via Mo Ryan:

On March 17, there will be a "Battlestar" retrospective at the U.N. in New York and a panel discussion of how the show examined issues such as "human rights, children and armed conflict, terrorism and human rights and reconciliation and dialogue among civilizations and faith," according to Sci Fi.

The "Battlestar" contingent on the panel will consist of executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, as well as stars Mary McDonnell (who plays president Laura Roslin on the show) and Edward James Olmos (Admiral William Adama).

UN representatives on the panel are Radhika Coomaraswamy, special representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict; Craig Mokhiber, deputy director of the New York office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights; and Robert Orr, assistant secretary-general for policy planning, executive office of the Secretary-General.

The panel will be moderated by "Battlestar" fan Whoopi Goldberg.

The invitation-only panel will take place at 7 p.m. March 17 in the U.N.'s Economic and Social Council Chamber, three days before the Sci Fi show's series finale.

So how many TV shows are there in the known universe that can rock the San Diego Comic Con AND the halls of The U.N.? Just stunning.

Yes fandom, it is "invitation-only"...but given that Emmy season is coming, we have to assume there will be video on SciFi.com soon enough. (And no, Logan and I weren't invited.)

They just all want an excuse to be in New York for St. Paddy's Day! :)

I've long argued that BSG is far more thoughtful than the mainstream news media, but I'm always laughed at. Ron Moore has a deep understanding of the most complex issues of our time, just like Ira Steven Behr.

This is a worthy forum for the most important show in American history, but I don't know about Whoopi Goldberg. I hope the part of her that was more Guinan comes out and not that gossipy side we get on "The View". I fear that her own understanding of these issues might not match what Ron is trying to say. I wish I could go! I'd totally buy a DVD of the whole event.

Thanks you, UN!

By the way, Ira Steven Behr has been hired as head writer on Season 2 of "Crash". I haven't seen it, but it apparently takes after the film.

No Baltar? He was the only person actually elected President on Battlestar. Besides, Roslin acted like some third world dictator and tried to steal the election from Baltar. So she gets rewarded and Baltar gets nothing. Typical UN.

Wow, that is fab news. I've tried to explain BSG as a human drama that tackles the tough issues (abortion, suicide bombing, child labor, coups, etc.) and get this look of "that's your idea of entertainment?". No - that's my idea of the best television drama out there and I'm thrilled to see the UN acknowledge these topics.

That's amazing news indeed! Not sure if the event keeps its cred with Whoopi moderating it though. I would think they'd bring in a professor or poli sci, literary theory or something to do it.

But she's great and I hope she lets the panel really get down to the politics of the story.

Oh, good, I was looking for a reason to loose all faith in humanity.

Proggrrl, why weren't we invited?

Makes no sense...

Oh, well. Maybe they are video taping it for posterity.

Emmys be damned, this is the highest recognition I've ever heard of for a show. Has anyone else heard of anything remotely close to this before? Does the U.N. ever concern itself with entertainment like this normally?
