Galactica Second Coming

Ever wondered how Richard Hatch would have continued Battlestar Galactica? Check out the trailer for Battlestar Galactica The Second Coming, that Hatch produced on his own as a pitch to Universal Studios many years yahrens ago:

So it seems Hatch's lesson from the failure of the first Galactica TV show was that it hadn't been *enough* like Star Wars. I think I even heard a Chewbacca growl around 2:10.

Very weird to see Hatch as a good guy again...

Good grief, I'm glad we've got the BSG we've got now from Ron Moore!

That looks like it wouldn't have been half bad. Richard Hatch definitely understood that the franchise would need to ramp up the drama and menace. It might not have gone on to be called the best show on TV, but it probably would have surpassed the original.

Admittedly at 1:25 the edit looks like Apollo outruns an exploding planet.

How long till someone releases an edit of Apollo's "you care for no one but yourself and your quest for power" being directed at Tom Zarek?

I see it for what it was/is, and as such, I don't think it's terrible. And he certainly invested both money and heart in it, not to mention several years of his life.

If it hadn't been for Ira Steven Behr and Ron Moore, I would have wanted all drama to be like this -- especially as a kid. It embodies all the conventional Hollywood drama stuff. Make the good guys really heroic and the bad guys as evil as possible. Totally unrealistic and uninformed by human history. It reminds me a lot of Babylon 5 and Capt. Sheridan giving some speech to the petty other races; really cheesy. The worst was the training scene at the point Apollo's American Gladiator-style son looked up.

Good for Hatch for being smart enough to recognize what was so special about Tom Zarek even better than Ron Moore did, it turned out.

Just when the character needed to be made morally ambiguous and subtler to be believable and more satisfying, Ron Moore selfishly chose to focus on making Adama and Roslin heroic and make Zarek take the moral fall. Very sad; he should have listened to Hatch in the early writing process to get this all right or at least had Michael Rymer direct the 2-parter because he's smart enough to make Ron not get away from this kind of easy drama.

It was cool to see John Colicos; that man could flat-out act. This might have been cool in 1998, back before the three Star Wars prequels forever destroyed the idea that cool special effects sequences could make up for badly-drawn characters, but now it just reminds me of the Wing Commander movie.

Oh boy . . . and heavily latex'd aliens . . .

I make no apologies for loving those classic uniforms, however. They were/are awesome.

A gutsy venture, hats off to Richard for trying, spending his own money on what is essentially a pitch film. But with what we have from RDM, I'm glad it wasn't picked up.

Still, it could have been fun in a Seaquest kind of way.

Holy crap take a look at 1:24. They blew up the Death Star...again! And then at 3:28 they do The Right Stuff perp walk. Outstanding! Mark my words, after a couple of episodes of Caprica, you guys will be begging for someone to pick this up.

I am not ashamed to admit, I loved it! If they had released Hatch's version instead of Ron Moore's, I would still have watched it! It seemed like Moore may have swiped a few ideas from Hatch... the style of the Cylon Raiders, and the concept of the Cylons evolving. Hmmm? If Universal does decide to have Larson release a movie based on the old series, I hope his plans include Hatch in a big way. Richard Hatch IS Battlestar Galactica! So say we all! :) P.S. I love the old uniforms too!

Sorry to all you old school BSGers, but this would have been an utter failure and a laughing stock.

@BSGFan1: Moore swiped ideas from that garbage? Yeah...because only Hatch could come up with a crazy idea like cylons evolving. Please, hang your fanboy cap up.

*sigh* I am not strictly an old school BSGer, I love Ron Moore's version just as much as I loved TOS. I was simply expressing my opinion of Hatch's vision of a remake, as are you. No need to hate! :)
