Is Season 4.5 airing in January 2009...or April?

Thanks to reader wjeffbishop for giving us a heads-up from DragonCon this weekend -- during some at least one of his panels, Aaron Douglas mentioned that he has heard talk of the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA season 4.5 broadcast being pushed back until April 2009.

This contradicts what Sci Fi Channel exec David Howe said earlier this summer, that it would air in January 2009.

April is just a rumor for now. We shall see if the date is moved or not for the final season... and if SFC history is any judge, fans will have to wait many more months for an official announcement.

ETA: several other fans at the con have confirmed that Douglas was discussing this new date...

ETA2: Here is a Geeks of Doom article on the subject. And, even more interesting, here is Cinema Blend with another theory: is this rumored delay an indication that CAPRICA might get a series greenlight?

ETA3: Sci Fi Wire reports that Sci Fi Channel denies this rumor; new BSG episodes will premiere in January 2009.

Of course.

The first part of Season 4 was put back from January to April this year, so I'd imagine the networks will do the same with the second half.

It's a long time to wait - I'm a patient man, but even the Hero of Neptune has limits...

How long can they possibly stretch this out for? I predict a year-long gap between the penultimate and final episode - 3 times the DVD sales!

@captain incredible

I tend to agree. Normally, I can weather any hiatus, though the season 3-season 4 gap was hard. But this is just upsetting. I'll remain patient and hold fast, yet still harbor a frak-load of resentment towards Sci-Fi.

I already harbor a frak-load of resentment towards Sci-Fi; this would only add to it. I have no doubt that the frakjobs at Sci-Fi will delay 4.5 till April.

One of my fandom friends pointed out today this could be Emmy-campaign related (not to mention midseason competitive-scheduling related)...

Unconscionable if true.

We have to thank Bonnie Hammer of USA/Sci-Fi for her commitment to Battlestar Galactica in the first place (and Burn Notice while we're at it) ... but she makes the final call on air dates and this is beyond an insult to the fans, it is a gut punch and a totally gratuitous one at that.

The Emmys have willfully and callously disregarded the superior program that is Battlestar Galactica so why kowtow to them now?

There is so much content at-the-ready! Caprica is in the can, first ep. Four to six eps of the remaining 10/12 hours of BSG are ready to air now.

Perhaps if Hammer realized that instead of investing in Rock Monster II or Mansquito for Sci-Fi Channel's programming and instead ran the entire series run to date of Battlestar, she could ramp up the numbers for DVD sales a whole lot more than with this cruel extended delay.

Perhaps, and I suppose that if Battlestar were to break the perpetual Emmy-snubbing that the Academy has subjected it to the wait might be worth it... But it's still far from completely redeeming. Networks have been consistently inconsiderate of their viewers lately, and the trend has got to stop.

I understand starting a little bit later than January if it really is an Emmy ploy, but April doesn't make sense. This year, Season 4.0 started in April, and the last two episodes weren't aired in time to be Emmy-eligible. So, if the Emmy-eligibility date isn't pushed back later next year than it was this year, then if SciFi starts airing the 10+ hours of S4.5 in April, the last two or more episodes, including this amazing finale we've all been hearing about, would not be aired in time to be considered for Emmys.

Brilliant, SciFi.

Everyone complains and resents SCIFI for doing this to the fans. But we allow it to happen by continuing to watch their programming and buying their DVDs (in two parters even!). Do we have much of a choice really? Let's just face it, we will forever remain the networks' bitches.

People look for complicated answers when something terrible happens. Maybe we were just caught by surprise and were beaten. And maybe we have to learn to live with that.

They're doing everything humanly possible to make even die hard fans not give a flying crap about this show.

this can´t be because of Emmys, just the opposite, because if BSG couldn´t send this year the best Season 4 episodes was because they started to air very late. The Emmys deadline is end of May.

Yeah, I highly doubt the Emmy deadline is a factor. I can only see two reasons for this, although Sci-Fi will never explain themselves.

1 - DVD sales. They did it with season 2. And no matter how much fans complain and vow to not buy them, the people who want the DVDs will pay the money.
2 - Avoiding competition. By around April, most of the television season is wrapping up, and any positive buzz that BSG might get will echo much more loudly because of it.

Don't believe everything you hear: http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?id=59372

That's downright reasonable of them. Apologies to Sci-Fi.
