Keeping those sets...Forever

The Spoiler Geeks blog has posted another clipping from next week's Sci Fi special issue of TV Guide, this time about BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.

It is a tiny piece with some sound bites from Mark Stern, a Sci Fi Channel exec. In it he promises that the final Cylon reveal will be "organic and satisfying" and not "some day player from season one." After confirming Sitrep's recent news about the first BSG movie being in development, Stern points out that SFC has solved that whole dismantling-the-sets-forevah issue that fandom is always worrying over:

[Stern] is hoping for another BSG TV-movie and says a story is already in development. No need to stop that wrecking ball. "Before dismantling the sets, we're photographing them all in digital 3-D and putting them into a computer," Stern says. "We'll be able to revisit BSG with live actors and virtual locations. It's the coolest thing!"

Meanwhile, here is a cool set I've been meaning to post for a while: a great diner exterior from the CAPRICA set...photo courtesy of The 13th Colony. Love it.

Well that just made my "Sets" portion of my website obsolete. Doh!

Hee hee, I'm sure it won't as it's still fun to research how the physical sets are constructed and the crews that were behind it all in the first place.

I don't know about bluescreen versions of everything. How can they make CIC look convincing if it's virtual (meaning without the people in the background). I know bluescreen scenes can look good in the background but I'm hoping it's not all going to be that way.

Interesting choice they've made to try a digital set. Perhaps they were inspired by "Sancutary" the Amanda Tapping project (also shot here in Vancouver) which has experimented with using video game technology to create virtual environments with live actors. It could be a less expensive option and thus make it more appealing to the accountants who seem to run TV these days...

Glad you liked the pic! Thanks for the link.

I'm kid of wary about the whole "computerized sets" thing, but I hope it works.

Also, it's nice to know that Pepsi has made it to Caprica. :)

Do they really have Pepsi on Caprica? (See the menu in the window.) What about Coke?

it's going to look like ass, plain and simple. Did anyone see the star wars prequels? Is there some reason they need to destroy everything with movies in the works?

There's no reason for it to "look like ass". BSG already has CG set extensions and they can be quite convincing. The only exception is with the hangar bay, where the CG version has noticeable differences from the set, but that's only relevant when a combination of the two is seen in one shot. Full CG sets with actors shot against bluescreen could work quite well.
