From one of our most reliable sources ever:
The new Battlestar Galactica webisodes "The Face of the Enemy" start going on line next month. Two recurring male characters are revealed to be gay.
One hears the first webisode was shown at some sort of Producers Guild event or something. Full-on making out was apparently part of the fun!
Who are the recurring males? Gaeta, whose very name has “gay” in it, never seemed too interested in the girls – but perhaps that’s too obvious?
My money’s on Tigh and Tyrol. Remember how sore Tigh got when he found out the chief was secretly boning Boomer? (source post/SPOILER ALERT)

Sitrep is also hearing that the webisodes will premiere online in mid-December, though the Sci Fi Channel has yet to make any announcement. Last week The Futon Critic posted the webisodes are to be broadcast on air January 15.

My guess (as is most of fandoms) was Gaeta, but I was trying to figure out who his significant other would be. Hoshi has had so little screen time, I hadn't thought about him. I hope they address the relationship in the series as well as the webisodes.

After the tasteful handling but actually pretty cliche Cain/Gina pairing, I'm excited for something that will definitely explore it. Bravo.

ReplyDeleteUm, I hate to break to you, but regardless of what the California Supreme Court rules or Arnold does, a Constitutional Amendment can't be overturned as "unconstitutional." The courts have no authority in the matter. Not that a little issue like that has ever stopped the ACLU...

Silly? Unnecessary? It strikes me that this is Battlestar doing what it does best; taking real world concerns, putting its unique situation's slant on them and letting drama emerge.
ReplyDeleteIn any case I'll wait to see the webisodes before judging their merit. It may not even be critical plotwise - it might simply be an incidental acknowledgement that gay romantic relationships exist and that there's nothing wrong with them.

ReplyDeleteWhat makes you think its simply political correctness? Maybe they're genuinly concerned about the absence of healthy gay relationships on screen and feel that the imbalance needs to be redressed.
Furthermore it might simply be that they needed a romantic relationship to from part of the webisode plot. Other romance subplots may have been critised but it's telling that, as a whole, their plot worthiness has rarely been questioned.
Your assertion that a gay relationship must be onscreen soley for political correctness seems to be an assertion that having only heterosexual relationships is not a different kind of political correctness.
Unfortunately your argument does not have merit. We are constantly bombarded with the homosexual agenda. Even to the point that it is disproportional to the actual incedence in society. There have been long running shows dedicated to the cause, and I feel that I wind up seeing two people of the same sex kissing on some show almost every week. Battlestar has even used this type of situation before in Razor. Tell me how this is cutting edge anymore? It seems they are just running out of ideas for people so they just turn the roulette wheel to get a plot device. Maybe it is good the show is ending after this season.

ReplyDeleteThe reason it seems like there are two same-sex individuals kissing on tv almost every week now is because it is finally something which is socially accepted enough that writers can create these storylines at all and show the actual diversity which exists in the world.
You say they're doing this because it is the politically correct thing to do right now... so I'm assuming you had a similar reaction when it was a female that became president? That was something which was obviously done to show how much more equality exists in their society than we have today.
I hope that Quiznos gets to bring us this late breaking revelation when the show stats again in January.

ReplyDeleteThere was a post-season joke reel that circulated at some point in which Felix clearly indicated he's gay -- it was a joke, but it's quite possible that the actor has known all along that his character is gay -- for example, he's probably secretly in love with Baltar when they are working together early on -- the joke worked because it was entirely plausible.

ReplyDeleteI am not sure what your point is on the woman president. Women have been in leadership positions in various countries well before this country was even discovered. Note Queen Mary I of England, Mary Tudor Queen of France, Queen Isabella of Spain. These are only the leaders of the 1500's. How about Cleopatra of Egypt? Just because we have not elected a female does not mean there is not equality in our society. That is the problem with all of these writer types. They have to break down situations to some perceived "inequality" that exists in our society. That is just bunk. Anyone can get at least close to the presidential level if they play their cards right and make the right decisions for themselves.
At the point in this series, there is no dramatic potential in a gay relationship in and of itself. The lesbian relationship in Razor was no big deal until Helena found out Gina was a Cylon. The sex scenes in this series are incredibly unerotic anyway.

ReplyDeleteWell, the adolescent sniggering sure is. And one thing I've got to say for RDM and DE is that they've created a show that brought the misogynistic, homophobic wing of SF fandom all the way out of the closet.

No, delow, on BSS we're "constantly bombarded" with the "heterosexual agenda" -- and some of that pretty damn ugly, unless you consider as "normal" the behaviour of rapists like Alistair Thorne and the sadistic sex play it was very strongly implied New Caprica-Cavil engaged in with Ellen Tigh. It's also pretty explicitly stated in 'Black Market' that many women in the RTF are routinely prostituting themselves for food and medical supplies.
Baltar spends most of the first season having sex with a psychotic hallucination (or an "angel of God", if you're so inclined) -- which sure sounds like jerking off in my book -- and then uses a sexual fantasy to disassociate himself from being tortured. (Don't even get me started on the nymph squad...) In fact, is there a woman on this show -- besides lesbian Admiral Cain -- he hasn't at least tried to get his leg over?
Starbuck is so screwed up, she treats her husband as a sex toy, and will frak Lee but won't get divorced and live with him honestly and honourably because that's against her religion. (Guess the sacred scrolls don't prohibit adultery.)
Of course, to a certain mindset that's just life. Gays and lesbians have a "lifestyle", and any depiction of it in pop culture is part of an attempt to advance an "agenda". Tbe only problem is -- it's much like the Cylon plan. It's pretty damn hard to find any evidence it exists at all.

ReplyDeleteI get where you're coming from, Eric, and I know it's not a homophobic place but you know what kinda fraks me off about that reading? Remember Gaeta tries to murder Baltar, and when ol' "butter fingers" fails to pull that off, he lies under oath when Baltar's life is quite literally on the line.
I don't want to pile on Ron -- because he's in a no-win situation where gay characters are concerned on the dark and twisty world that is BSG. And "hell hath no fury like a closet queen scorned" is a damn sight less interesting than Gaeta as someone who put all his trust in the hands of the worse possible person in the universe. And he, quite literally, almost got flushed out a launch tube for his troubles.
