Of all the glowing reviews from which the marketing team could've gleaned a catchy, raving quote, they decided to go with "...truly great show." Do they enjoy underwhelming people?
Do you mean to tell me that the three previous BSG seasons have only resulted in $70 million in DVD revenue?! Ouch. That pales in comparison the the vast sum of money earned by a so-so release like Kung Fu Panda $215,434,591 domestic gross over 18 weeks.
@james: I really don't think you can make a comparison like that. Most dramatic TV shows don't sell as much as a massively-advertised and globally released family film like Panda.
@ProgGrrl: Yup, I'm beginning to see that dramatic TV is a completely different kettle of fish. I'm just shocked that all of the incredible effort the BSG team has put in for the past five years amounts to so much less financial reward than a single major film.
Now I understand a bit more why Ron & David had to fight to so hard to get the show into production. I'll treat my BSG boxed sets with more reverence than ever, now. :)
Series costs? DVD revenues? Ad revenues? DVD profits? DVD markup to the retailers?
If they're referring to just the "re-imagined" 2003 series, $70 million in revenue is not something to boast about. The original series pilot released as a movie had at least $35 million (adjusted for inflation) in revenues in North America and Australia.
@Anonymous Can we please get over this old versus new thing? Some people like the old one some like the new one and some like both but all have exhausted the the realm of new and interesting arguments.
And the writers' share of that is..... $7 ;)

ReplyDeleteThis is such a bizarre marketing idea...
ReplyDeleteah wait! I ignored the 'dvd trade ad' bit. Silly.

I have a feeling that cash from the DVD sales doesn't really go to Sci-Fi anyway. I think universal supports all the DVD sales stuff.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, that quote is riduclous. "Truly Great Show" almost makes it look like they took a quote out of context to use.
