It is rare in art that the moment or specific aspect of a creation can be traced back to the time or component that made it not just special but sublime.
Two things occurred which elevated the new version of Battlestar Galactica to the realm of high art:
Ron Moore put the "God is love" line into the script from Six's character in the original miniseries and a very astute and risk-taking executive (the aforementioned Michael Jackson)urged Ron Moore to enhance that aspect of the story.
Without the conflicting religions of the Cylons and the humans you're basically left with a war movie (robots seek to destroy humans).
The depth of the storytelling comes from this central conflict.
Kudos to Ron Moore for the inspiration and trusting it and to Michael Jackson the television executive.
I think the professor at the University got seduced by Callum Rennie's excellent performance in "Flesh & Bone".
But she didn't realize that this is essentially a "WAR MOVIE", with only vague references to religion.
Religion plays the most minimal role on this show. Evidenced by the fact that we don't really know anything about the religions of either faction.
Yes, the Cylons are supposedly monotheistic. But all we really know about their religion are a few vague comments by Six.
Yes, the Colonials are polytheistic. But all we really know about their religion are a few lines from Elosha.
Religion on BSG has only been used as a suspense tool: - Does the book point to Earth? - Who is the Cylon god? - What are the visions? - Where is Baltar's latest "one god" gimmick headed?
And we know this stuff will not be answered until the very end of this show.
So BattleStar is actually a great "WAR MOVIE". But in terms of religion, it's pretty flimsy and vague.
This blog has some seriously wacky comment-spammers who can be counted on to write completely stream-of-consciousness, unedited comments that are always too long.
At the risk of irking @anon, I would point out to Ashoka (like your site by the way) that the religious aspects of the story inform it with added depth simply because religious belief itself is so amorphous and mysterious. The mere mention of a known faith or article of faith or a scene hinging upon opposing religious views lends a great deal of atmosphere and provokes thoughts and reactions in the viewer. The motivations of the characters become more complex due to the many contradictions inherent in religious belief - even they don't know why they're making the choices they are sometimes. I'm not condoning religious belief, just pointing out that for this particular sci-fi show, it really brings something extra.
