Movies

Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune tracked down her sources to get confirmation of what internet radio show, The Doctor and Mrs. Who, reported last night about the possibility of three Battlestar Galactica DVD movies being made. According to Maureen Ryan's sources:
Executives are now doing number-crunching for these proposed films, and any deals for these movies are far from done. However, it would make sense to make more “Battlestar” TV movies while the show’s creative team and actors are still all in one place, as it were.

According to one source at the network, the talk about the films is just idle chatter “at this point.” But several other sources close to the show says there is good reason for “cautious optimism” about one to three future “Battlestar” films, which would get made this summer, if they get the green light.

“Nothing’s etched in stone yet,” one source said – creative decisions haven’t been fully fleshed out and the casts have not been locked in.

Maureen also reports that there will be a set of webisodes to bridge the gap between the airing of the first half of season four, and the last half of the season.

The current batch of episodes will finish up in early June. Production is underway on the last 10 episode of the show and the final scenes for the series finale will be shot in June. Production could get under way on the TV movies as early as July, and one source says the films could get the green light in the next two weeks or so.

At this point, it’s not known when those last 10 episodes of "Battlestar" will air. Informed sources say that a decision on that won’t get made until mid-summer, so my guess is that Sci Fi won’t run the final 10 episodes until 2009.

  1. That's wonderful news about possible DVD movies. I would imagine that they would be self-contained stories that go off on a tangent like Razor. What concerns me though is that it says production on these movies could start as early as July! That seems like a rush job writing-wise.

  2. Well if they are working on budgeting these projects, then they at the very least have detailed breakdowns of what these stories will entail.

Another factor that could effect shooting is what happens with SAGs ongoing talks with the producers. I don't think anyone wants another strike to happen, so hopefully everything can be resolved by the time SAG's contract runs out at the end of June.

  3. I was lucky enough to get to ask Jamie a question during his Talk TV interview. After the film he is attached to, 'Mineville', was already discussed, I went to my backup question and asked about the proposed BSG films. He said the topic of doing films came up months ago and, at the time, Ron was against the idea. Just recently, Ron changed his stance. Jamie didn't know much about what was going on at this point or what his contract situation might be. The actors contracts are set to expire at the end of June.

Jamie also mentioned, when asked about any interest in writing, directing, etc that he and James would be directing five webisodes (either each or combined, I was a little unclear since I had just gotten off the phone).

  4. I think half the cast have signed contracts to do other stuff in the summer - so how will that work? Plus they'd probably want a LOT more money once they are off contract, which I assume would be after they've done filming Season 4.

  5. I'm sure all of those factors are part of the discussions.

  6. Hopefully, one of them will be more Pre-First Cylon War - Young Adama. That should be a no brainer. It was the best part of RAZOR IMO.
