On Wednesday, June 22 at the Million Dollar Theatre at 307 S. Broadway, in Los Angeles, California, the Los Angeles Conservancy's program of Last Remaining Seats presents, Zoot Suit (1981):

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, this vivid musical is the filmed version of the play that made Edward James Olmos a star. Olmos reprises his role as the narrator, the mythical “Pachuco,” in this blend of fact and fantasy based on the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial and Zoot Suit Riots of 1940s Los Angeles.

Daniel Valdez (also reprising his stage role) stars as Henry Reyna, the leader of a group of young Mexican Americans wrongfully imprisoned for murder. Complete 1/2" multi-track stereo session masters survive in perfect condition in vaults at NBC Universal, including all format music (main titles, bumpers). This first volume in ambitious CD series focuses on entire pilot score, includes both original opening sequence plus post-production edited version as well as composer's lively disco source cues heard during Carillon sequence, also presented in stereo. Syfy has cast Luke Pasqualino (Skins — U.K.) as Adama. While Ben Cotton (Hellcats, Riese) is the other lead, playing Adama’s commanding officer.

First, here’s some official character descriptions that give you some new details about the show:
Pasqualino will star as the young, talented fighter pilot William Adama, a recent Academy graduate who finds himself assigned to the newest Battlestar in the Colonial fleet: the Galactica. Full of ambition and in pursuit of the intense action that the Cylon war promises, Adama quickly finds himself at odds with Coker (Cotton), the battle-weary officer to whom he reports. With 45 days left in his tour of duty, Coker desires an end to battle just as much as Adama craves the start of it. Though they clash at first, the two men forge an unlikely bond when a routine mission turns dangerous and becomes a pivotal one for the desperate fleet.

Blood & Chrome is set during the 10th year of the first Cylon war. The show will debut with a two-hour pilot on Syfy, executive produced by David Eick.

Final Thoughts on Caprica

Bear McCreary has posted another of his insightful and thorough articles that takes us behind the scenes on how he created the music for the final episodes of Caprica. Be sure to listen to the music samples and video of the scoring at his blog.

As an aside, I'm a hockey fan. (Go Kings!) So, I recognized the singer singing the Caprica anthem as the guy who sings O Canada at Canucks games, Mark Donnelly.

Back to Caprica.... Jerome Wetzel reviewed the finale for Blog Critics and highly praised the series, declaring: "Despite only one season, Caprica joins my list of Best Shows Ever, made even better by no cliffhangers."

A while back on G4 she had some fun with Attack of the Show co-host Kevin Pereira:

And now for my final thought... Caprica's last two episodes, Here Be Dragons and Apotheosis were two of the best episodes of the series. Maybe if the entire first season had been aired without breaks like Lost did during the final few years of its run, and perhaps with consistent marketing, Caprica might have had a chance. Every new show needs a little shake down cruise and it seems just toward the end the writers had found the voice of the show.

Well, at least the one and only season will live on in DVD and hopefully Blu-ray. It's a worthy addition to the BSG canon. And from where Caprica left off, it could be a great spring board for Blood and Chrome to continue the Battlestar Galactica epic.

First Look: Blood and Chrome

Preliminary concept art for Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome has been revealed. Via, Blastr, HDR, io9, and Screenrant.

In a brief interview with the Galactica Sitrep, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome writer and executive producer Michael Taylor says about the artwork:

Those pics were just the first of the many concept art sketches we've been creating. They don't necessarily reflect any particular incidents in the script; as "concept" drawings they're helping us flesh out the new world of Blood & Chrome. And it is a new world, one that owes much to the BSG series of the past but at the same time uses CGI to open up that world in ways that we hope fans will find fresh and exciting.

As for the show's status, SyFy has officially green-lit a two-hour pilot, and we have begun pre-production, with filming expected to begin at the end of January, or very shortly thereafter. This is the fun part for me: seeing the script take tangible shape (or "virtually tangible" shape, since practically all of the pilot will be shot on green screen) as our director (Jonas Pate), DP (Lukas Ettlin), VFX supervisor (Gary Hutzel) and a host of artists -- and of course the cast that we'll soon be gathering -- bring it to life.

Universal Cable Productions will produce the 2-hour pilot with Syfy utilizing cutting edge CGI and virtual technology.

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20's and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet... the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet.

"The 'Galactica' universe as re-imagined by Ron Moore and David Eick is rich with possibilities and backstory," said Mark Stern. Battlestar Galactica re-imagine-er Ronald D. Moore is now apparently re-imagining and rebooting the 1960's tv series The Wild Wild West, as first reported by Entertainment Weekly. This is in addition to his new series in the works previously reported by Deadline Hollywood described as an "adult Harry Potter set in a world ruled not by science but by magic" that he's developing for NBC.

I always liked that show. When I was a kid I'd watch the reruns in syndication. It was pretty cool. (I never saw the Will Smith movie reboot.)

A few sharp-eyed fans have noticed that the entire BATTLESTAR GALACTICA series is now listed on the Netflix site for "streaming coming soon"... some of these fans say as soon as October. Everything in the series except the telefilms Razor and The Plan have streaming listings.

ETA: Netflix has officially announced this new streaming deal with NBC/Universal. The multi-year deal is happening and it begins next week, to include BSG, EUREKA, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, and many other shows.

Nothing like instant gratification to poke one into a rewatch, eh?

Maureen Ryan of The Chicago Tribune exclusively reports on a new BSG spin-off project:

Those who've been hoping for a new chapter of the "Battlestar Galactica" story may get their wish.

An online series called "Blood & Chrome" is in the works, one that would follow the experiences of a young William "Husker" Adama in the first Cylon War. According to Mark Stern, Syfy's executive vice president of original programming and the co-head of original content for Universal Cable Productions, "Battlestar Galactica" and "Caprica" co-executive producer Michael Taylor will write the the script for the new venture.

"Blood & Chrome" is "about a young man's initiation into war: both the realities of war as fought by soldiers on the ground (and in Battlestars and Vipers), and the somewhat less real version portrayed in the media," according to Taylor.

After the intense Music of Battlestar Galactica concerts at the House of Blues last year, I’m perfectly content just to roam the convention and take it easy this year. So, if you see a dude walking around with dark hair and a goatee, it’s either me… or maybe Ron Moore. :)

However, I will be making a few appearances, including two panels and a CD signing. So, track me down and say hi, especially if you’re a frequent blog follower.

Bear also hints that there will be a surprise announcement at SDCC of a new project he is working on.

On a similar note, HBO recently began airing a powerful documentary called Gasland, about natural gas drilling, a process the industry calls "fracking." Unfortunately for us, the Halliburton fracking process tends to saturate ground water with cancer causing chemicals and natural gas, so that people who have water wells near fracking sites get to enjoy flammable water coming out of their household faucets. Maureen Ryan has confirmed with SyFy they are bringing CAPRICA to San Diego Comic-Con this year.

Starz has announced that Lucy Lawless will attend the SPARTACUS: BLOOD & SAND panel, and there is a rumor that James Callis will be attending with the EUREKA panel (he has joined the cast for the new season, which premieres July 9, to play physicist Dr. Grant).

The HAWAII FIVE-O panel will include co-star Grace Park. Writer/producer Mark Verheiden will be there for a panel about his new series FALLEN SKIES, co-produced by HEROES' Greg Beeman and executive produced by Steven Spielberg.

Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition

The Science Fiction Museum at Seattle's Experience Music Project has announced a very special exhibit coming this October:

Experience Music Project|Science Fiction Museum (EMP|SFM) is proud to announce its latest exhibition, Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition. Organized by EMP|SFM and in partnership with Universal Cable Productions and Syfy, Battlestar Galactica features three stunning, full-size prop spaceships, iconic costumes, new exhibition films, music and other props from the original and reimagined series. Battlestar Galactica opens to the public Oct. 23, 2010 and runs through March 4, 2012 at EMP|SFM in Seattle.

“The museum is honored to be organizing the first exhibition devoted to both series,” said Brooks Peck, Curator of Battlestar Galactica: The Exhibition. “Battlestar Galactica is one of those rare science fiction shows that appeals to a wide range of people because it combines high adventure with very personal drama. It explores what it means to be human, and has a lot of fun doing so.”

Opening weekend (Oct. 22-24, 2010) will include museum member and public events with some of Battlestar Galactica’s most popular personalities.

Deadline Hollywood broke the news this week that Ron Moore has signed on with Sony to create new TV work:

Ronald D. Moore has found a new TV home. The Battlestar Galactica creator has inked a two-year overall with Sony Pictures TV to create and executive produce series projects for broadcast and cable through his production company Tall Ship Prods. Moore is coming off three consecutive overall deals at NBC Uni’s Universal Media Studios that were tied to Moore’s services on Syfy’s Battlestar Galactica... Sony is clearly making a push in genre series. The studio recently signed Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough to an overall deal.

An Evening With Caprica

Those of us who made it to the CAPRICA panel event at the New York Paley Center tonight got an unexpected treat: advance screenings of both this week's new episode and next week's mid-season finale! Unfortunately for me, I was late and only got to see the latter (written by BSG alum Michael Taylor btw). It was... astoundingly action-packed, with cliffhangers galore! Also, you get the unique joy of seeing James Marsters say the words: SO SAY WE ALL. Frak yeah.

The Q&A panel after the screening with Ron Moore, David Eick, Syfy's Mark Stern, and castmembers Esai Morales, Sasha Roiz, Alessandra Torressani and Magda Apanowicz was a lot of fun and quite informative. Those Adama brothers are a hoot...

A couple of highlights gleaned at the panel:
- No one would say exactly when the second half of CAPRICA season one will air (although SyFy has apparently told the press October 2010). And despite the rumors from earlier this month, no one mentioned CAPRICA getting renewed, or any other new BSG spinoff ideas. Keep your fingers crossed.
- Ron Moore confirmed that we will visit two other colonies in the next set of episodes after the hiatus: Gemenon and Tauron.
- When asked if an ending has already been worked out for this series, Moore and Eick say they have not done that yet, it is too soon. They see around six organic endpoints, each is a landmark event within the timeline between the current present on the show through to the events of the BSG miniseries.
- Esai Morales says that big changes are afoot for Joseph Adama in the back half of the season, following some crucial developments we saw tonight in the mid-season finale.
- Sasha Roiz got his role as Sam Adama after auditioning for the role of Tomas Vergis (Graystone's business rival). James Marsters was being considered originally for the role of Vergis as well... but his unique talents seemed much more suited to Barnabus.
- To answer a question I got this evening: NO, Michelle Forbes does not have a cameo in CAPRICA 109. That's just someone who looks like her a bit.

The Paley Center did a great livetweet of the event last night.

At the Syfy upfronts this week, Esai Morales elaborated further to io9 about "the wringer" Joe Adama will go through in 1.5, and says that CAPRICA's renewal is still up in the air:

We don't know when we're going to get picked up, so my choices are limited – I can't go out for pilots, but I don't want to because I really enjoy [Caprica]. I enjoy doing television for people with brains. ...I like that the show makes you think, and it sells ideas. It sells questions. It sells perspectives. Do you believe in one god or many or none? There's no good or bad – there's good or bad deeds. As they say in the Bible, God loves the sinner, not the sin. ...This show makes you think. If you want to scratch the surface, you'll get something more than backdrop.

CAPRICA marathon tomorrow

If you still have any friends who need to catch up with CAPRICA from the beginning, SyFy is running a full marathon on Friday March 12th. It starts with the Pilot at 2pm, and goes through all subsequent episodes leading up to the premiere of new episode “The Imperfections of Memory” at 9pm.

For those of you who just need to see the last couple of episodes, they are still streaming via SyFy Rewind in both regular and Enhanced (commentary) versions.

On CAPRICA, ratings, pacing, and the future.

Airlock Alpha spoke to SyFy executive Mark Stern this week and let him expound on why the network is 100% behind their new series CAPRICA. Stern says the network is supporting the show "for the long haul," and fans should not let early ratings news get them down or make assumptions about the show's future. Not surprising for a BSG-based show, the DVR+7 ratings are actually higher than expected despite the live Friday ratings being lower than BSG's ever were.

Stern also has some interesting things to say about what is coming up in the next few episodes before the mid-season break. After we see the rest of the first 10 episodes, CAPRICA goes on hiatus until late summer.

First Episode of Caprica Tonight

So, tonight is the first regular episode of Caprica. Last week's airing of the two hour pilot episode did not have huge ratings, noted The Hollywood Reporter. But:

Of course, most "Battlestar" fans interested in "Caprica" had probably already seen the first episode, since the pilot has been available on DVD and online. Syfy says that between Hulu, iTunes and Syfy.com, they've received about 2 million viewers pre-premiere. The second episode is always more telling than the first, and this time that goes double for "Caprica."

Besides last Friday everyone was watching Coco. But, there's no new Conan tonight, so everyone will watch Caprica, undoubtedly. Even Conan himself might be watching, along with the rest of the people of earth. And if you did miss Conan last week, his last show is still on Hulu.

So, there's no reason to miss out on Caprica tonight.

Caprica Thoughts

Maureen Ryan in the Chicago Tribune runs down everything you need to know about Caprica:

How's the first episode? The two-hour pilot is quite compelling. Morales and Stoltz are well-matched in their subtle approaches to their characters, and the pilot asks the kinds of questions you'd expect from the creators of "Battlestar": When should we let go of what we've lost and how do we use technology to avoid painful truths? (My full review of the "Caprica" pilot, which came out on DVD a few months ago, is here.)

How many episodes have you seen? I've seen the pilot and two additional episodes, and the post-pilot episodes are less focused and more melodramatic than the pilot. In its early going, "Caprica" doesn't have quite enough narrative drive; there's a certain choppy quality to the proceedings, as episodes jump around among the characters' somewhat separate story lines. Still, it took "Battlestar" a while to find a consistent tone and to hit its creative stride. If the handsome-looking "Caprica" can beef up the urgency, unify the storytelling and make me care more about the characters' dilemmas, it should take its rightful place as Syfy's flagship drama.

Why did you feel a little guilty when watching it? I didn't love it as much as I loved "Battlestar," but I had to remind myself that my affection for that show developed over several seasons. "Caprica" is a different show with a different tone and goals and I'm OK with giving it time to prove itself. If the show is guilty of anything in the first few episodes, it's of trying to do too much, which is preferable to a lack of ambition.
