BSG: "A Signature Brand"

In this New York Times Decoder blog post, amidst the now-common jokes concerning anyone who gets too enthusiastic about this show, lies the interesting revelation that NBC Universal President Jeff Zucker considers BATTLESTAR GALACTICA one of NBCU's "signature brands." Right up there with SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, LAW & ORDER and the rest.

On the positive side, this bodes well for BSG in the future -- and CAPRICA, and David Eick, and Ron Moore. Very good news for any fan of smart genre fare.

From another perspective, this suggests that the back 10 episodes of Season 4 will almost certainly be held till 2009. Because that's what you do when you want to milk a signature brand for all it's worth.

Every time I see another jab at BSG fandom, or hear another joke at our expense, I try to keep my eye on the ball here. Forget the actors and the journalists. Take another look at what The Powers That Be on this show do. Are they mocking fandom and ignoring us? No. They are podcasting, making Q&A videos for us, sending their cast to cons all year round. They are videoblogging, inviting fans to pick DVD cover art, creating games and widgets and wallpapers. They are making hilarious 8-minute recap videos, letting us watch eps online before they even get on air. They load their DVD releases with extra materials that only trufans will dig through and appreciate. They allow a massive collection of fan fiction, fan art, and fan videos to thrive online without subjecting it to harrassment and yank-downs.

Thanks, Powers That Be. We appreciate it.

Signature brand. Nifty.

Since Razor was technically Episodes 4x01 and 4x02 of BSG, will we be getting 4x03-4x10 this Spring or 4x03-4x12?

I believe we get 4x03 through 4x12 now; and the back 10 (4x13 to 4x22) is TBD, possibly 2009.

Your comments are very true, the powers that be really are very fan friendly...though I don't think I can forgive Sci Fi for the year long hiatus we just endured. But apart from that, they have proved they really do get how much people love this show.

The jokes are just that, and acting wounded about it is more tiresome than the cheap jibes. A little self-deprecating humor wouldn't hurt, Proggrrl. If anything, it's the over-earnestness about "respecting the fans" that earns the jokes in the first place. Let's get back to having fun :)
