Blu-Ray FTW

If you've been thinking about getting Battlestar Galactica in HD DVD, don't. All signs indicate Blu-ray disc has won the high-def format war. The latest blow to HDDVD is Warner Bros. announcing that they will transition to being Blu-ray exclusive for their HD home video releases. (They have been format neutral until now.)

So, now only Paramount and Universal are exclusively supporting HD DVD. But with hardware sales and Blue-ray titles outselling HD DVD's, Paramount and Universal won't continue to lag behind. So, I'd just wait on getting Battlestar Galactica (or the original Star Trek) until they come out on Blu-ray disc.

For more info on the whole format war, check out The Digital Bits coverage.

Stick to reporting about BSG an d the writer's strike. Format wars are not your strength.

I hate to rain on your parade, but with drastically lower prices on HD-DVD players and discs its far more likely they will win. You haven't even attempted to present your numbers. I agree with the above statements.

Commenter #1: Thanks for that profound insight. I don't own an HD set, and thus I don't own an HD DVD player or a Blu-ray player. So without your highly intellectual or reasoned observation I wouldn't know that about Blu-ray. Thank you for enlightenment.

Commenter #2. It appears that simple math is not your strength. Math from the Digital Bits:
HIGH-DEF MARKET SHARE - BRD VS HD-DVD SOFTWARE SALES Since Inception:
Blue-ray Disc: 62%
HD DVD: 38%

I don't have a dog in this fight. I really don't care about these formats. I'm just interested in the facts. If people want to buy a HD DVD player, go for it. They are nice and cheap these days, and they are practically giving away HD DVD titles.

But, in the long run, the writing is on the wall. HD DVD isn't doing to last. Of course the corporations could have avoided conflict and confusion by agreeing to a single format, just as they did when DVD first arrived. But they decided not to.

I've been following the developments in this format war for some time waiting to see which way the tide would turn. It's turned.

I had heard that the HD DVD fanboys have a reputation for screeches and screeds as they troll and flame their way around the internet.

Thanks for living up to your reputation.

Commenter #3, numbers, charts, and graphs are sited in the articles I linked to in the post. Links to the NY Times, Nikki Finke, a nice chart on Mac Rumors, tons of data tables on The Digital Bits.

Once you pour through all the data, the numbers speak for themselves.
