Gordon Gekko and the AMPTP

Above: Nick Counter of the AMPTP declares that "Greed is good."

The AMPTP producers and studio executives have pretty much forced the WGA to strike as soon as Friday, because of AMPTP's insulting and childish refusal to discuss with the writers any plan to address any fair residual compensation for digital downloads.

The WGA will announce their decision Thursday, at 7:00 p.m. at the L.A. Convention Center, and all signs point to a strike being officially called.

United Hollywood has more.

While it makes me sad to think some of my favorite shows might be delayed because of the strike, any study of the history of residuals system since 1990 shows that the producers are just being frakking a--hats.

Just to give you an idea of how the revenue for pretty much anything not broadcast tv, a theatrical release or a VHS (yes you heard that right) cassette goes - actors get little, writers get little, the middleman gets a lot and the producers are the only ones making a living.

Put another way - when one bought an ep of Battlestar Galactica on itunes out of that 1.99 every single actor in the show split ONE PENNY of that 1.99. Apple recoupled only the cost of hosting and serving the file, and the rest went to NBC Universal and another penny or sliver thereof went to any writers....

Writers, please, don't. Can't we worry about this at a non-BSG-is-about-to-enter-its-climactic- fourth-season time?

This is all just so goddamn inconvenient for me.
